A friend of mine bought a mark 2 TT nearly two and a half years ago.

He bought the car used (3 months old with 400 miles on the clock)) from an independent dealer in Derby or so he thought!

Was advertised through Pistonheads.

He's looking to change the car now for something else and had a the shock of his life when the dealer told him that the car had outstanding finance on it when it came to trading it in. Seems like the shoddy no where to be seen dealer sold the car on with finance outstanding. Obviously they are no where to be seen now! :evil:

As he was buying from a dealer who at the time had Astons, BMW's & others he didn't give getting a HPI check a second thought. So if your in the market for a TT or any other car and buying from anything other than a main dealer it may be worth getting the HPI check done. You have been warned!

That's not uncommon - even more so in the fallout from the free and easy credit legacy of the noughties.

HPI every single time. For £40 or whatever it is now you can't not do it IMO.

Agreed if you were buying from an private individual, but when you buying from a dealer you kind of assume that they have done that already as most legit independent traders would have to make sure the car is HPI clear before they sell on! At least the honest ones!

Just a thought - was the dealer a limited company??

If so, he should be able to do a search at Companies House (www.companieshouse.gov.uk) for the company name and (even if it has been dissolved) trace the directors/shareholders.

Might be worth a try :?

Therein is the problem - "assuming"!

Main dealers supply HPI etc under the approved used system but Independants are barely a step up from buying privately so even the ones that have nice premises etc I would always do all checks available if I was buying from them.
