Thanks for the PM - I had to replace it in the end. Temporary and cosmetic fix was non-functional. I drilled down the centre conductor towards the amp - tapped a thread and screwed the antenna into it. Once replaced with antenna and amp from eBay the signal was so much better that I started listening to terrestrial radio! I think my photos are in a previous thread- I will post the link.
