In order to accommodate country-specific headlight regulations when traveling between the UK and European Continent, the Mk2 the headlights can be adjusted to avoid dazzling on coming traffic. This can be accomplished either manually or by a code change Adaptation called "Tourist Solution".

MANUAL HEADLIGHT ADJUSTMENT -

For halogen lights, you can find the instructions in workshop manual: Electrical System - (A005TT01320) which is located in the Knowledge Base -

CODING LIMITATIONS -

For Xenon lights, look under the list of Control Modules for Address 55. It may be labeled either "Headlight Range" or "Xenon Range" depending on your year and model. Once there, you will see the OEM factory code setting based on your factory light setting - this value should NOT be changed. There are no long code changes available for Address 55, only the ability to change the vehicle and equipment type. Note - these screen shots are from a 2007 pre-facelift German spec Roadster.

NOTE - The Tourist Solution Adaptation can only be performed on vehicles with Revision C and firmware 0020 or newer. So be sure to check the information listed under Address 55 and verify that the revision and firmware of your vehicle are suitable before attempting the Adaptation. The data below is from my 2007 pre-facelift with Xenons. Although I have revision G, the firmware is only revision 0010 so this Adaptation would not be possible -

From other posts on this topic, after performing the Adaptation to change the headlight setting, it may cause a fault and a warning on the DIS when the lights are turned on because headlights no longer match the vehicle setting under Address-09 Cent. Elect. I believe (but have not verified) that this can be corrected by checking the box where shown below (Address 09, Byte 4, Bit 5). In actuality, this fault actually serves a useful purpose of reminding you to reset them back after the trip.

ANTI DAZZLE STICKERS -

Then there's the simple fix which is to just buy a set of anti-dazzle stickers from Amazon or eBay, apply them once you've arrived and just remove them after the trip.

FROM THE CONTINENT TO THE UK -

As a bonus, here's the instructions from my German Owners Manual -

The cone of the dipped beam is asymmetrical, which means that the side of the road on which you are driving is more strongly illuminated. When you are driving on the other side of the road when abroad, this will dazzle the opposite side of the road.

Headlights with halogen bulbs: To avoid dazzling the opposite side of the road, both headlights have to be adjusted.

Headlights with gas discharge lamps Xenon light. To avoid dazzling oncoming traffic, the headlights must be changed.
For safety reasons, only have headlights adjusted by a specialist company. You can obtain further information on converting xenon headlights from your Audi dealer.

Converting headlights

Remove the headlamp
Swing the wire bracket of the headlight cover to the side and pull off the cover
Push the lever at the bottom of the headlamp to the left until it stops
Push the lever at the bottom of the headlamp until it stops on the left (left-hand traffic). Arrow pointing right (right-hand traffic)
Carefully replace the headlight cover cap and secure it with the wire clip
Replace the headlamp
It is necessary to carry out the lever adjustment of both headlamps.
