Sure I have read on here recently about downloading a free version of Vagcom software of this site, and buying a cable of ebay, so as you can scan the car yourself for faults. Any info would be great.

Old 409.1 software and Drivers comes with the Cable or you can download the drivers automatically with windows and there are also other software versions, VCDS Lite for example available from Ross Tech or other sites for free.

If using Win7 set the program compatibility to run as XP SP3.

Also read the after-market radio information/warning.

Because this is a free version is it only a very basic scan to pick up fault codes??
As Tritium has mentioned Google "Ross-Tech" also "VCDS" and "Vag Com" and read the Audi Tweaker's Guide as well as loads of other useful info on this site also.

With the free version you can clear fault codes, check the Measuring Blocks to calculate power and for further fault diagnosis. Also test switches and electronically reset Lambda and ESP & ABS sensors before/after replacement. Change interior lighting, change auto-locking and reset the Throttle Body Alignment.
