This got asked on ASN forum, so I did some tests.... and posted them on a couple of other forums which would probably be interested... so here it is below for you.

okies...
did the tests
video's also... (excuse shakey hands)

Tests done.. % mix water/meth changed, and ign source flammability test, with combustable (paper) to show actual flame, as meth burns without a colour.. invisible...

100%, 50%, 40%, 30% meth tested

100% Meth - Flammable (no sh1t sherlock)

50% Meth - Flammable

40% Meth - Flammable

30% Meth - Not Flammable

and what it looks like in indy racing... when on fire... (poor [email protected])

Thanks for sharing test results .... last vid make you think though.....

Would adding a dash of screen wash concentrate to give your mix a bit of colour also give any flame some colour?

Would be good to find out just for added safety if a dye of sorts would help and then be advisable for those using it. including me!

Thanks for doing the tests as well, really interesting stuff. :)

Yep it's nasty stuff. Anyone working offshore will tell you. We have a specific bit of our fire fighting training based around methanol fires that said we do have around 40 tonnes of the stuff on here at the moment ;)

If you put a little salt in the mix the flames turn yellow and it makes then easer to see.

Hey Bill

Really good videos and thanks for doing the leg work on the information.

Just a quick question, did you use w/v or v/v for your percentages?

Cheers

okies..
added vag concentrate screen wash to some neat meth
no real colour change. a *slight* yellow initially which I thought was promising but that was only for an instant and probably something else

cool.. I'll try that next.. will see how much makes a noticable colour.
cheers

I read boric acid makes it burn green... cool, but not so practical.. maybe

Just googled this which looks interesting.

color fuel color additive cautions
Code:
Green	Methanol, 1 gallon	Boric Acid, 50 g
Dark Blue	Methanol, 1 gallon	nothing - alcohol burns blue
Sky Blue	Methanol, 1 gallon	Potassium Iodide, 6g; Methylene Chloride, 200 ml	Poisonous fumes!
Violet	Methanol, 1 gallon	Potassium Iodide, 50 g
Yellow	Methanol, 1 gallon	Sodium Chloride, 50 g
Orange	Methanol, 1 gallon	Calcium Chloride, 50 g
Red	Methanol, 1 gallon	Lithium Chloride (actually any soluble lithium salt), 50 g

aw pants...! Thanks for trying...

I have some halfords mix in mine for a little blue tint to separate the neat tubs from the mixed ones.

I think the salt option mentioned is not going to be great as I presume will make it more corrosive than it already is.

I'll have to get a laser etched metal plaque saying " No I'm not dancing, I'm on fire please put me out!" [smiley=bomb.gif]

Yep more than a pinch I think it was about half a bucket of rock salt in 25 ltrs of methanol and you get a slight yellow tinge to the flame.
