Hi Everyone

Took my 02 reg tt (75k) into the garage the other day (not stealers, just german specialists) to have some suspension springs done, and they said it was whining in first gear and needs looking at or possible replacement box further down the line.

Now that they have pointed it out I can hear it myself (not present in the other gears), it sounds a bit like it would in reverse.

Does anyone here have any idea how much it would cost to 'fix' first gear (garage can only say labour for taking out box £400 plus whatever is broken), and also do you guys think it really needs fixing or is it something that can be lived with (am tempted to ignore it!)?

Thanks S

Bump!
Anyone? :?
Does anyone else have a whine in first gear at all?
Am a bit worried about taking it in and then ending up with a recon box that won't feel as good as my current one (and also set me back 2-3K!).
Be interested to know your thoughts, husband keeps suggesting I sell it and buy a 350Z, but I don't want to go to the dark side! :D

If you hadn't noticed it yourself then it's surely not that bad?
There's no easy answer. If you were thinking of trading it in anyway and have got the cash then I would say go ahead because you then avoid the gearbox spend which will not make the car worth one penny more.
If you don't want to change cars at the moment then I suggest you first have the gearbox oil changed. If the oil is clean then there's possibly not a lot wrong with the box so carry on.
However,if the old oil contains silver grey metallic particles this is a bad sign and you will need a recon box sooner rather than later.
350z's are good vehicles by the way,not as nice an interior as a TT but a more exciting drive.

£300 wow, makes the 2k I was quoted for a recon one sound expensive, although I know they are a bugger to get in and out, but even so!
Think I will mention the oil change idea, and see what they say.
Thanks to you both for the suggestions.
