Having my car stranded in France (see http://www.********.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=157932&p=1774101&hilit=montte#p1774101) has made me think how useful it would be for us to compile a listing of parts that have failed and at what mileage.

I'm compiling the listing in excel and posting an updated version every 3 -6 months. With something like that we all have something to consult and get things checked out or the option to replace pre failure (clutch peddle is a prime candidate)

Your participation is greatly appreciated

I hope folk see the use in this idea. :D

Update 1:
This is what I'm producing from all your responses

Item Min (90%) Max (90%) Car Age (Years)
A 10000 20000 2
B 11000 21000 3
C 12000 22000 4
D 13000 23000 5
E 14000 24000 6
F 15000 25000 7
G 16000 26000 8

*Figures based on the responses of x number of members

Update 2:
It'd be great to have the year of your cars (if not already in your signature)
and the year of failure as some have low/high mileage cars
its possible later cars also had revised (hopefully improved!) parts

Thanks

Blimey, steering rack AND clutch pedal going at the same time is pretty unlucky! Hope you got it sorted okay.
Nope, not yet anyway! the car is stuck in France meanwhile I had to return home to work. What a nightmare! The power steering fluid just spilled out of a leak onto the tarmac when I tried to top it up.

My plan was to drive it home (with VERY stiff steering) when I was unlucky enough to suffer this all-too common clutch peddle failure - right at a French toll station. I just wish I'd found out about the clutch issue on here but somehow I'd never heard of it.

I was told 1600 euros for the steering rack part and it would take over a week to get a RHD version!!!

On a plus note the French Gendarm was very friendly and helpful

Main component failures at the following mileage on my car.
Clutch at 95k
Haldex controller at 119k
Cheers.

Hope to get lots more from people so I can pull this data together

Were these failures or elective? Seems very low mileage.

Everyone please state whether the items failed.

I welcome electrical or electronic (andr mechanical components of all sizes) too.

Cheers guys, its really good to see this data coming in!

TOTALY DISSAGREE WITH YOUR STATMENT. Sorry buddy, you can find people on here with clutches going after 30k  Same with pedals. I will add tho my car was mapped so a bit more power and torque.

Nope they failed. Clutch pedal snapped and new one went on and welded up.

Not at all, just shocking to think that it could fail at such low mileage don't you think? Guess I should consider myself lucky that my clutch peddle broke at 80k!!!

Cheers again

Although there may well be people on here with clutches going after 30k IME that's very unusual and a clutch even with a remap is a lot more likely to last around 90k miles than 30k. There will always be instances of premature failure as with any component. I think the intentions here are to give us an indication of how long on average a component will last as a rule rather than an exception. I understand that an average will included those failing prematurely along with those lasting well beyond the norm for any given component. Maybe what we need is a list of components with a between life span. EG clutch between 60 and 95k depending on driving style and mods which would affect it. Just an idea.

How do you know thats the 1st clutch that broke tho at 80k? Could have had one go before  Mine shouldnt go again as been welded up :p
I have ALL the previous MOTs and bills for work carried out and although that's not a 100% guarantee its more than good enough IMO. :)

These are absolutely valid points though.

It was always my intention to put a range on them; as a statician will tell you on its own an average isn't alwasy that useful.

Update
The other point regarding 1st or second fail is absolutely important too. However, if we have enough data from everyone then it will be easy to pick out groups of failures at say 30k and 60k for example.

What we really need is a form that I can use to capture the important details from everyone

You guys can maybe help me capture all the details the form needs (while keeping it succint enough to encourage its use!!)

Please see fit to edit/improve on this but I thought this would be a good starting point. The user can copy and paste this text below and edit according to their circumstances before posting it back. Thoughts?

Yep I know you did however IMO its the same for all so I thought I would try and qualify and support my statements on failures :)

the clutch related problems are starting to appear to be a very common occurence!!

Anyone got other components they can report on too?

#20 ·
Rear left tie bar snapped at about 107K miles. Dunno if it had happened before; doubt it. Adjustable Forge jobbies fitted now. Water pump failed earlier this year/late last (about 95K miles?) but replaced under warranty as it was within 2 years of the scheduled cam belt/water pump replacement. Doesn't bode well for the next two years, though... :? Gearbox on its way out, graunching heavily changing up into 3rd at speed or just quickly, but living with it for now.

Howzat?

rear spring snapped 84k

hope this helps

I reckon its a very good idea to get the peddle replaced or strengthened. Others have said the master cylinder can be damaged it the peddle snaps. Some have said not to strengthen because its a design for safety that causes it to break. Read up on it so you can make your choice.
