1.8 or 2.0 TFSI...?

Hi, I’m looking at getting back into a TT and I’ve found a really nice 1.8 TFSI, what concerns me is the power output of the engine. I don’t drive particularly fast or hard op but I do like a car to have a bit of grunt. With that in mind and looking at the following power charts, what could I realistically expect from a stage 1 map.

A stock EA888 1.8l is rated at 158hp.
A stock EA113 2.0l is rated at 197hp and a stock EA888 2.0l is rated at 208hp

A Stage-1 tuned 1.8l will add ~ 30hp (188hp ) making 'almost' as powerful as a stock 2.0l.

Two things to consider:
  1. The 1.8l was mostly used on “low cost / low option” builds. Everything on a MK2 is an option and if you opted for a 1.8 it probably came with FWD, manual transmission, halogen headlights, manual seats, basic radio, etc
  2. A 1.8 will most likely be found on very early MK2's so age / wear will be more of an issue than that on a latter year 2.0l
Before you decide on either I'd recommend reading up on the various issues that plagued certain Audi motors (excessive oil consumption, defective tensioners, etc) that way you'll know what to look for / avoid (or at least budget for when it comes to repairs).

Keep in mind the 1.8T is the most likely (of 4cyl engines in Mk2s) to have oil consumption issues due to the piston design. It's an EA888 which is based on the early Gen 2 design only without the VL system and destroked to 84.1mm. Meanwhile the Gen 1 EA888s never had this issue (different pistons); and, as alleged by Audi, the actual Gen 2 engines in the Mk2 TTs were all new enough to have revised pistons (only earlier Gen 2s in the longitudinal cars were affected).

TBH I would just get an S model if buying an Mk2 if looking for "a bit if grunt". It's the best bang for the buck, pretty quick even completely stock, has bigger brakes (shared with the 3.2L), and is relatively cheap (it doesn't have the price premium like an RS does). Main thing to be wary about is the suspension but as long as in good condition you should be ok.

Otherwise if "scared of magride", buy a 2.0T with the Gen 2/VL engine in it. But IMO the EA888 has more potential for severe-problem-causing issues if left unchecked.
