I read you have to replace the balance shaft and oil pump assembly on this? Does this require dropping the subframe and removing timing belt?

Requires none of those things. Just requires pulling the oil pan off. Pulling the oil pan off requires pulling off the frame underneath the car though, but it's not that hard--does require removing or loosening the fender liners to get to the bolts IIRC. After you get the pan off you have complete access to the balancer assembly and oil pump.
