2012 tts engine?

Is the engine in a 2012 TTS a special engine with better internals or is it just tuned different than a regular 2012 TT?

If it's a different engine is there an engine code that I should look? I'm coming from MK1's but found a potential project TTS. Changing an engine out doesn't scare. I just want to make sure I'm using the correct engine.

Yes, the TTS engine is based on the older belt-driven EA113 (as opposed to the newer chain-driven EA888) but has been 'beefed-up' internally to handle more power.

To my knowledge all MK2 TTS's came with this motor (all years) and Audi did not use this motor in any other MK2 TT model.

The S engine or the high output version of the EA113 (CDMA, CDLA, CDLB), has many differences compared to the standard output EA113 engines (BPY, BWA, etc.). Some differences more major than others.

Among the major/notable ones:
-K04 turbo w/"up top" DV valve (i.e. not on turbo body)
-Lower compression ratio
-Stronger rods (however the rods are still considered a "weak point" if going above 450hp or so)
-Note the pistons on most DI EA113s are forged regardless of HO/std versions, as are the crankshafts. The rods, even in the HO, are cast which is why they are the "weak point" in the engine when going to high power levels
-Larger wrist pins--actually is a nuissance if you are building the engine for high power since most aftermarket forged rods are 20mm pin for the standard output engines.
-Upgraded engine bearings (presumably mains and rods)
-Different cams
-Bigger injectors
-Equipped with larger intercooler

There's some common statements on the intarwebs saying the block itself is different and reinforced/stronger on the HO, as well as having a stronger crank, but I'm not 100% sure about these myself.

In any event they are definitely different engines, albeit the same basic design and engine family. The engine in the Mk6 .:R, typically code CRZA is the same engine with some minor differences (different intake ducting/system, different MAF sensor, etc.) and is slightly detuned from the CDMA, CDLx variants used in Audis (TT-S, S3). The lower power ratings however may have just been a numbers game to make the VW seem like it was slightly worse than the Audis.

Also of note, the Mk5 Ed30 GTI engine (code BYD) is also very similar to these HO engines. It pre-dates them slightly but has many of the same differences for more power from the std. output versions--K04 turbo, bigger injectors, stronger rods/bigger wrist pins, etc. However this engine was also even more "detuned" compared to the 265hp number on the S3/TT-S. However all of these engines (BYD, CDMA, CRZA) produce very similar power numbers on similar stage tunes with upgraded HPFP, downpipe, meaning they're more or less all the same with minor ancillary differences for the most part. Note that a std. output engine with mods of K04, upgraded injectors, HPFP, also perform very similarly in terms of power and output, however they do so with a larger difference in engine tuning given the higher compression ratio and all that. At these kind of power levels (~350-400hp) it's certainly arguable the HO engine would be more durable; at higher power levels (>400hp), you're usually into having to build either engine type given the rods situation.
