Hi blsmith,

Audi are well known for not installing wiring that is not needed for the options fitted to a particular car. Therefore if the factory fit Clarion HU did not need a CanBus connection, the twisted pair won't be there.

What are you actually trying to achieve? Are you going to replace the Clarion with a different HU?

If I remember correctly, the main problem with Japanese home market HUs is that in Japan the FM radio transmission system uses a different range of frequencies to UK/Europe. That means that Japanese HUs won't receive some or all of our FM stations. I assume that NZ/Aus use the same range of frequencies as us.

You can, or could, buy a "frequency shifter" unit to attach between the Aerial and HU which would enable stations to be received. It was a bit of a kludge however.

Also I assume that a Japanese factory fit HU will only display in Japanese characters.

There are two ways in which this issue can be approached.

Firstly, the wires in the car can just be spliced into the wires of the new HU either by crimping or soldering butt joints or by using multi-pin connectors. This is the approach shown in the pictures above and you can see the mess.

Secondly, the wires in the car can be interfaced with a Audi factory spec Quadlock connector. This would be my preferred option. It would enable all the main new HU connections to be disconnected with just one connector.

Probably eight or more years ago I helped a forum member from Australia or New Zealand install a Quadlock connector in a Japanese market car. The string of posts for this seen to have disappeared which is annoying.
