Ac code 00604

Really need to sort my ac

I have got Vcds and get the code 00604 I have been to a ac specialist and everything has been checked and can't see anything wrong the only thing I have been advised is to change the ac compressor

Its been re gassed every component checked and it appears everything is working

I have been looking online and some say to replace the fuse box on top of the battery so I checked all fuses both on top of the battery and inside the dash I know it's hard to diagnose online but it's driving me insane :wink:

Any pointers would be great

Welcome to AC issues with the TT. I personally JUST solved mine (for sure finally) yesterday.

I had gas in my system, the clutch appeared to engage when it should, and I had NO cold air. First things first, my cooling fans weren't operational, so I replaced both of those to see if it changed anything. No surprise, it didn't.

I then changed the Pressure Switch (located near the windshield) and still had no AC.

I took it to a shop, paid $100 USD, they sucked the gas out, refilled it (before ASKING ME!) and tell me the compressor is shot. I never had any loud noises with the old compressor, just my luck I guess.

I bought a used compressor on eBay for $40, installed it, and paid a family bud to fill the AC system back up. I've got cold air!

The issue then, was I had a terrible screeching noise. I was worried it was a bearing on my old/used compressor from eBay, but I took Hoggy's advice and bought a new belt and tensioner, and wallah! the noise is gone, I have cold air, and I'm cruising down the road like normal again!

Sounds like a similar story to me mate, so far I have done

Vcds scans
Checked all fuses
Re gas x2
System holds gas no leaks
Fans have been replaced about 2 years ago by Audi and operate as they should

I'm leaning towards the compressor too if I'm honest

Once someone who knew something told me the compressor was failed, it was pretty much decided.

I eBay'd a "new" compressor for ~$100-150 USD, but could get a used one for ~$40-60 USD.

My thought, was put a "used" one in the system, and just replace the compressor right off. I didn't touch the drier/accumulator, condensor, nothing else.

Many will say if the compressor fails you should replace those other components to ensure no "bad compressor parts" ripped of into the system. This I'd say, is 100% true and smart.

My thinking.... I could spend $40 on a used compressor, install it myself, pay someone to refill the system, and potentially be <$100 on the entire project (I was quoted $900 USD for a compressor only replacement), and at least SEE if that worked, and/or for how long.

IF there was a clog/issue with other parts, I'd be out ~$100, vs. spend ~$300-400 on brand new parts for the whole thing, and another $60 for the gas install (again).

I opted for the cheaper route (I do have Dutch heritage after all) and so far... it's all worked out **fingers crossed**

I'm sure I'll be back here with a vengeance if/when the used one goes out, but until then!

Before changing the compressor I would ensure that the fuse on top of the battery is actually passing current as they tend to burn out underneath the holder! so you or a friend put a meter on the fuse area to check, the fuse must be a tight fit in order to work, this should give you fan operation which is reqd for cold air.

Unless I'm missing something here then you (and the advice) are totally on the wrong track. 00604 is a flap valve fault i.e. the flap that controls the airflow over the evaporator isn't working. You need to fix this before doing anything else.

In any case, condemming the compressor without evidence is a good way to waste money. It is relatively easy to tell if the compressor is weak by checking the high pressure output. Whilst the average home mechanic might not have the gauges etc. to do this, an AC specialist should do this as routine. SIgns of a weak compressor are a normal low side and a low high side (this can be caused by other things as well but without this symptom the compressor isn't the prime suspect).

Also:
If it is the clutch, this can be changed without disconnecting the compressor.

Changing the compressor without changing the drier is not recommended.

If the compressor has failed mechanically then you need to clean any debris from the system or the new one will fail quicky. This is a specilist job and probably also requires an additional filter in the compressor inlet.
