Wow! Well I'm planning on going to see a 225 mk1 TT this week with a view of becoming an owner. Thought I'd come on here to see what to look out for. There seems to be a hell of a lot of things that commonly go wrong with this car though! Is this a fair comment or am I just getting a non-representative view based on the fact I'm reading a thread dedicated to issues/failures?
A bit, post your concerns on the MK1 forum topic section and you will have the main nuts and bolts answers of what to look for, here is a taster of the answers you'll get viewtopic.php?f=2&t=286964&hilit=buying+a+tt, now get on the MK1 topic section.
Great car if you get a good un [smiley=sweetheart.gif] , money pit if not [smiley=bigcry.gif] , take your time and do your research which you have clearly already started, good luck and welcome to the TT fraternity...well, almost  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I'd pay attention to the dashpod cluster (you can get them refurbed for about $300+) and ask about the Timing Belt and Tensioner.. if they don't have clear documentation, I'd reduce the purchase price by $500.

Looks like I've been unluckier than most: 2000(V) 1.8 225 - purchased with 60K on '07:

-Bose stereo volume repair ~80K
-Wishbones - both fronts failed and replaced at ~85K
-Turbo - replacement fitted ~105K
-Turbo - re-failed due to low oil level (!!!) - refurbed at considerable cost - ~112K
-Clutch pedal failed ~115K

DSG exchange gearbox @ 40k
Mechatronix @ 40k
Brake discs and pads, all round @ 56k
2004 3.2 V6
It lived in London before I had it so much stop start.

Front drop-links @ 49K miles.

The failure on mine was caused by age-deterioration of the protection rubber allowing water ingress and related problems. So although the mileage was relatively low, the parts (assuming they were original) had lasted over 10 years.

OEM parts came in at ÂŁ40 for the pair, around 1 hour labout to fit - so not an expensive failure at all.

Indicator Relay @62,000
DSG Gearbox and Mech @ 70,000
Tie Rod End @ 80,000

225 BAM clutch release bearing & drivers side front shock absorber 82000 miles :(

1J0959455S, the 345mm cooling fan - 60000
Thermostat had also failed and stuck shut - 60000

Only failures so far in 4 years of ownership of our 2005 3.2 Roadster

Oh, apart from the time when I opened the roof and there was a cardboard box in the space where the rear glass should have gone, the cardboard box won.

I replaced the fan this week with the help of previous posts on this forum so a big thank you to all

72k miles and another BAM engine plus turbo at 70k miles
