Hi there all,

I'm moving on to the next part of my journey with my TT and would like some info regarding Body kits as the title suggests.

Disclaimer before you read on:
I am in no way trying to hate on the look of the standard TFSI look I have now, I simply want to change the look/feel in a way that lines up with my tastes. While still thoroughly being in love with the car in general :)

So yeah, the 8J look, it's nice but the person who sold me the car, took it away for work to be done on the engine, came back and tore up the front bumper, rather than just getting it repaired. I have been looking at other bumpers and seen some really nice ones. So thinking I would take the opportunity to start with a body kit

I'd really like your views/experiences with the RS look body kits and where you may have:
a) purchased them
b) the prices you paid if you don't mind sharing that
c) did you have to buy each component as a package, as it's pricey, i'd like to do it in stages
d) did any of you order off Alibaba, with good experiences and could you share them with links maybe? Please

I'm looking at the RS style kits, but also really like the wide body kits. Ebay doesn't have that much going for it with a reasonable price that I have seen.

Thanks in advance

Daz

Here's a slight variation on advice I gave last time...

Upgrade path
Step 1: Sell your TT
Step 2: Buy a TTRS

You can change the bumpers, rockers grill, wing and diffuser but then you'll have a 'pretend' TTRS that ends up costing as much as a real TTRS.

As for buying parts on Alibaba or eBay, it's really hit or miss. Mostly ill fitting parts from China (you get what you pay for)

Sorry. I'm clearly being too polite, I'll keep my car and continue asking questions pertinent to it as this is the forum for that, not to be made to feel bad for asking them. Well done for gaining troll points, totally deserved.

I'll give alibaba a try with just the bumper first and let you know how it goes. Seeing as the damage is already done to the front bumper and sourcing the original is just about the same price.

I guess looking for a fitting service in Yorkshire or surrounding areas that you lot may or may not have? Even places to avoid?

Thanks all

Most price on Alibaba are for whole sale. Some seller will not sell you just 1 piece and those who will, the price is more than 2x per piece. You still need to pay for shipping which will be very expensive. +TAX +Paint +Installation
😖😩

On Honda, the vehicle manufactured in Japan, US and Thailand the bumper will not interchange to one another. Not sure about Audi.

With "body kits" is that you have a few paths:
1. OEM+ type stuff where you're actually using OEM parts to make look like an upgraded model.
2. Addition parts like lips and skirts and stuff like Maxton, etc. parts.
3. 90s boy-racer/ricer type stuff that comes off eBay, Aliexpress, etc.
(There's also a fourth with totally custom work that I won't mention as if this was the intent one would not even be asking on here to begin with, they'd just be doing the custom work.)

With #1 you have the problem that the parts are expensive unless you can get them cheap from wreckers; plus as mentioned if you make your car look like an RS...it's still not actually an RS.

With #2 you have parts that are additions and don't always look right or good. Most people here do like the Maxton stuff, but me personally I don't like most of it. Up to one's taste of course.

#3 has the problem that you might be stuck in the 90s and/or might be a teenager, lol. Remember to complete the teen scream look with the obligatory off-centre tow-hook mounted licence plate for good measure ;) Of course again your car so you can do what you like with it.

All that said many people do put on RS grilles and fixed spoilers, often times with non-OE/cheap-China aftermarket stuff. Heck Audi even did it themselves with the Competition package (which apparently was called "Amplified" in UK).

Most people find the China grilles are actually okay because there's not much you need to do with them. Stuff like bumpers though I would not recommend because they have to be prepped, primed, and painted--not just something you put on and are done with it...unless you want to have the really ghetto look of driving around with unpainted parts on your car.

You don't have to take my advice though... Before you go diving into buying this China bumper stuff off Aliexpress, etc. go and check with the body shop(s) you plan on using to have them painted and installed. Probably about 8/10 or more of good body shops will tell you NOT to buy this stuff and that it won't come out good, the paint won't adhere properly, it won't shape/fit properly, etc. Many of them will even refuse to do work with these type of bumpers because they often come out poor and/or don't hold up well over time. This kind of stuff can spell a bad reputation for the shop which is why lots of them don't deal with it--they don't want to get blamed when the fault is really of the substandard parts. You can always find a shop willing to take your money though and do what you want, but they're likely still going to tell you there's no guarantee on the results.

Awesome. That's a great reply. Appreciate the honesty too

So, all of that does lean me more towards the oem front bumper for the RS. Not that I would have thought of this originally, I looked.at the replacement bumpers for the TFSI and this come up on a video and looked pretty cool as an addition.

I mean, it's not an urgent thing to have done to the car, but if I am going to pay to get a replacement, a repair and the work done to blend it to match the car, considering this wouldn't have been an option in the first place as I was very content with it.

I don't think rushing in to something with Alibaba or imports is wise with your info. So, I do appreciate the feedback. I know its not an RS. But it is a nice look and I don't want it to make me look like a boy racer as you warn and I'm dangerously verging on that if I enduldge my inner child too much.

The same goes for your reply @Wolvez

I'm no wrapping expert. And it's another thing I'd not considered till being in this position. But I will look in to it, give it a new lease on life as there are bits of corrosion, which while are very minor now, will continue to bug me over time

@FNChaos amazing story. Thanks.

Has anyone had a full wrap done and the car treated before hand ? Would like some guesstimates of what to pay (assuming the treating is a requirement before a full wrap anyway)

Troll? Ok. :devilish:
Just providing you (and anyone else searching for similar answers) with a reality check.

You've obviously purchased a car that doesn't fully fulfill your desires. You've asked about mods that are very expensive or nearly impossible (cough, digital dash) to achieve.

I simply (and curtly) pointed out that the costs involved could have bought you the real thing.

If you have the money to perform said mods then I'd say you made a mistake purchasing the car that you did.
If you don't have the money, then it is a waste of everyone's time writing up replies to something you will never do.

Personally speaking, I’m a fan of keeping cars as original as possible - with the old tweak here and there. If dazzlett wants to spend a fortune on making his car look like a TTRS, and if he has the money, why not. Sure, the cost to do so may well be crazy, and bordering on real TTRS money. The main thing for me (if it were my car) would be getting it to look authentic and not as if it were an abomination of a job - that would be money well and truly wasted.

Externally, it’s possible. To get the look, I imagine. I did one or two exterior mods to my 2001 MGF such as adding a genuine MGF Trophy 160 boot spoiler that I had professionally resprayed. The goal wasn’t to make it look like a trophy, I just liked that look.

Id just say be careful, costs will spiral out of control and you may end up with a car that looks like half a TT and half a TTRS which is gonna look abysmal.

As with anything in life, my motto is “if you’re gonna do something, make sure you do it right” - cheapo parts and the like will only make for poor results.

I don’t think anyone here has the right to pass judgment on another member for what they want to try and achieve with their car. Each to their own as they say, along with different strokes for different folks. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea what you are planning, but doesn’t mean it’s wrong for you personally.

Life’s far to short to worry about what other people think, if you wanna do it, get on with it, do it right, post up pics etc and show everyone what a good job of it you’ve done!

Anyway, good luck with it regardless - I hope whatever you do ends up with you enjoying the car, and at the end of the day, that’s THE most important thing.

Yup I feel you there. It Is certainly a choice of what we want to do. The like of the look. The purity choice of view and so on.

Sadly not all will agree, but Iike you, you see both sides and offer council with that in mind. Rather than going on rants of other posts which trigger your nasty side because people won't agree.

I do have the money. I am not rich but this is a project. One I have been looking forward to for a very long time. With my own tweaks and quirks and probably some mistakes doing it. It will take time and there is no illusions there.

So, an idea of where I would want to go which will also wind some of you up. Is the new exhaust on either side. Or 2x double exhausts. Unsure of how else I want the back end to look. So a defuser would probably be the next body part.

So my thought is. If I won't think the back end suits it even after looking at pictures of this already. I may try for a new rear bumper and possibly a rear spoiler. Fixed but not massive. The car really likes nice with it out. I'd like to make that a feature.

The engine I am just having the timing belt done, water pump, then new brakes, disks, calipers and diverter valve. That's on the 27th of the month and about £830 parts and labour

From there. Remap. Not sure how high to go on this, but I'd love to try it. See if I feel the benefit and it is right for me. Then move up of I do like it. Else. Stick and focus on making what I have nicer. So hose kit, Turbo needs some love but no rush.

Chaos is right, any aftermarket kits look like complete 💩 on a TT. Only really subtle stuff like Maxton lips etc look good.

If you buy OEM kits like an RS it'll cost you a fortune, but if you're dead set on ruining a nice car with garbage kits, knock yourself out.....
You're entitled to your opinion. I understand your skepticism, I am looking for info on how to do this best. Not debate your view on the car image being untouched. Perhaps start a post for people who do wish to have that conversation

Look people, this is supposed to be a forum for helping others, not ranting on their own personal preferences or what they want to do or achieve. I personally don’t like a lot of things people choose to do to their cars such as massive rear spoilers, but hey - it’s not my car so what do I care or why should I?

Honestly, I’d like to see how the project works out. It’s either tasteful and well done or it won’t be. Cost here isn’t OUR issue, it’s HIS. Does anyone here let someone else tell them how to spend their own money? - didn’t think so.
