Instrument cluster problem, but not the usual

Hi all,
I am glad I found a community for this nice car. I have just introduced myself in that particular section.
My car is a 225bhp quattro roadster.
Have had the car for a month now, but after 2 weeks a problem occurred.
One morning all gauges simply did not work. No speedo, no rpm, no fuel, no temp.
All other items worked, all service lights, the LCD display etc.
Just only all gauges refused to start working.
I spend already a whole day in trying to find the problem and reading about it, so I really hope you can help me. This problem is very rare, and what I can find is that normally it means no power due to fuse or broken wire. But how is it possible that the rest of the cluster is fully working?
Info about the car:
  • LCD (DIS) has been replaced before, according to previous owner, and is fully working.
  • Battery was replaced literally a day before collection a month ago. Is showing 12.25 in rest on DVOM. Is a 27n 60Ah.
  • Alternator has been replaced a year ago. 20C trick shows 12.0V engine off, 14.2V engine on.
  • of course both the fuses have been checked, connected to seat rail for ground even shows 12.5V engine off.
and disconnectiong a fuse at a time gives effect in more things not working on the cluster, so fuses are ok.
  • I have removed and opened the cluster to look for traces of burnt parts or cracked solder joints, none found.
  • I even purchased a spare cluster for 100 euro (cheap), but that turns out to be a 2 connector type. So only good for parts for me.
Car would not start with that one connected, so I guess the MY 2001 (or 2000?) has a cluster with connections to the immobilizer.

What I am planning to do, and where my questions are:
- check pin nr 1 on the blue connector for voltage.
I understand that pin1 is the other side of the wire coming from fuse 15, so it should have 12.5V, correct?
Which pin is ground on the connector, is that pin 9 or 24 ? Or should I connect to the seat rails again?
Is the cluster switched on the ground wire, with one of those 2 pins? One permanent (pin 9) and one switched by the ignition (pin 24 ) ?

I read somewhere the cluster operates on 5V, so where is the resistence/part that reduces the voltage form 12.5 to 5V? On the print board of the cluster?
Does it sound logical that this part has failed?

If I remove the fuse , the fuel gauge sinks from empty to off the scale empty. If I refit it, and turn on the ignition, the fuel gauge hand returns to just empty. Tank is full with 480 km to go according to the DIS.

I hope there is somebody who can point me in the right direction...thanks in advance!!

Hi Robbe, Welcome to the TTF.
It appears you have covered everything, so sorry I can't help & as you found out dashpod can't just be swopped over, immobiliser prevents that.
This problem is appearing more frequently recently & usually requires sending away to specialist companies.
I have a list of repair companies if req.

Thanks Hoggy, but I am located in The Netherlands, so sending to the UK is not really an option for me (customs delays mean 2 weeks waiting etc, not to mention importing taxes).
@PlasticMac, I have the Ross-Tech scan tool, but have no real experience with it. I connected it, but it can't connect well to the cluster it seems.
Or at least it could not move the needles with the test. Maybe I do not use the right options in the menu.
And yes, all 4 gauges do not work (only the fuel at least tries a bit, from super empty to normal empty)

Hoi Robbe, in The Netherlands you have a few options I've come to known so far.

First up you got Joop Haagen, he's an individual with a garage that only does MK1 TTs. He's pretty much your goto guy and knows them inside and out. He also recently organised a TT event with over 200 of them :) (Look up Four Cirkels, Goor) Doesn't have a website but a Facebook group.

Then you've got Remco Nieuwenhuis, which is a bit larger, also known as the Audi TT Specialist. Located in Ermelo.

Then there's one more that I know of called Bongers Auto's or also known as the Audi TT Liefhebber. Located in Sint Oedenrode.

One of these guys will be either able to fix it for you, or know an address to get it fixed (y)

Welkom bij de club ;)

If you are up north like me, I do my maintenance at Vakgarage A32, nothing TT specific but the main mechanic there used to have one himself. Or I go to Audi Bourguignon, altough they are quite expensive as it is an Audi dealer.

Hi Spookles, thanks for the info and welcome! I will certainly look into that, as I expect to be at the end of what I can check...
As I live in the middle/south near Den Bosch, I was hoping for a specialist more close by, but they always seem to be in the north :)
There is a person I found on Marktplaats ( online market place)more nearby in Wijk bij Duurstede that advertises he can do the LCD swap. Maybe I try to contact him first, maybe he performs other repairs as well. Otherwise that mr Haagen sounds promising.

But first I will check the last things with the DVOM and report back on what I found.
