Left high beam not working

I have a 2008 3.2 S Line with adaptive bi-xenon headlights, and my left side high beam recently stopped working. It's my understanding that both the low and high beams use the same bulb, and it's just a shutter that opens/closes to switch between the two. I can see this working on the right side, but nothing happens on the left, and then after about 4-5 seconds the right shutter closes and its back to the low beam only. I do have a "left main beam headlight" warning on the information panel. The bulb obviously works, and I've even tried with a replacement. Could it be the ballast, or a problem with the shutter itself? Is there any way to repair the shutter other than replacing the entire headlight assembly?

Your right the bulb is one single bulb and it's the shutter that alters the beam

First thing to do would be to swap the units over from one side to the other, then the ballasts etc to see if the issue stays one side or follows over

Thanks for the suggestions. I swapped the housings and the problem followed over to the right side. After swapping the ballasts I put the housings back on their original sides, and the problem returned to the left side. Based on that I assume it's a problem with the shutter itself.

I ended up buying a replacement headlight housing off of eBay and swapping over my original bulb/ballast to the new unit. I still have the old housing laying around the house, but have never tried to crack it open to see if the shutter is repairable.
