Lost key now replacement issue

Had my key and belongings stole on holidays

I didnt have a spare only the (service key with spanner)

the auto guy cut a new key but said he couldn't get the car to accept the new remote key. he did the inserting of new remote key into ignition turned on ACC and then the door process with both another key he cut and my service key.

it still wont accept the new remote. any other ideas? its really annoying as the car starts but the alarm goes off for 5-10 minutes until the car accepts the new key and stops the alarm?

Hi, Are you locking unlocking by using key in door? If so alarm/hazards will flash when unlocked until Ign turned ON, thats normal procedure.
Try a C/L resync.
resync the C/L
Press lock or unlock on Fob & within 1 minute lock or unlock using key in door, repeat more than once.
Make sure passenger door unlocked before resyncing, never affected mine but someone said it worked if he unlocked pass door first.

The new key still won't take no matter what I do. So just to re-iterate I have no working remote keyfob

At the moment I only have;
1x remote key that isn't configured to the car (it's brand new and has brand new battery - it's an after market key (see attached). It has the chip pairing for the immob and allows me to start the car. However everytime I enter the car the alarm goes, I have a work around , i put this new key in and start the car then I use the service key to open and unlock the doors manually and that stops the alarm - but SO ANNOYING!
1 x service key - that has no immobiliser chip
1 x spare key blade that unlocks the doors, not attached to anything just the blade on it's own.

I believe from my reading that the remote key must be in the door whilst reprogramming? But what do I put in the ignition? The service key allows me to turn to the 2nd ACC setting but obviously the yellow immob key is flashing.

Any other ideas? it's so annoying not having a remote key

There are two procedures...

Re-sync
This requires only the key in the drivers door.
This won't work for a new key. The key needs to have been already programmed to the vehicle in one of the 4 slots.
This procedure is designed to be self rectifying. If the key loses sync (battery replacement for example), usually you will try the fob, it won't work, so you'll use the physical key instead - and then hey-presto, the key will work next time.

Re-programme
This requires key in the ingnition on ACC (I would assume with the imobilizer chip present) AND a key in the drivers door.
The key that is used in the drivers door does not need to be the one being programmed. However the key that the fob button is pressed on, does need to be the one being programmed.

As you don't have 2 keys with imobilizer chips, you can proceed as follows:
Remove the fob part from your new key, leaving just the key blade and RFID imbolizer chip in the ignition. Then take the fob outside the car, lock with the service key in drivers door, and press the fob button to complete the programming.

You can re-programme remote slots without clearing/erasing keys first. The number of times you press the fob button when programming sets the "slot number" the key will be programmed into. There are 4 available slots. If you re-programme an existing slot, whatever key that was previously present will be erased and replaced with the new one.

Edit: If you can't disassemble the key into the 2 parts, stay inside the car so you can press the buttons on the fob. Either roll the drivers window down to lock the door with the service key, or get someone to assist you outside the vehicle.

a quick query , do you know what important the radio frequency of the key has? I see on ebay people selling replacement keys but there appears to be different frequencies.

NP.

I believe they are usually 433MHz. That's just an assumption though as it's the usual frequency to use for such things.

I see on ebay people selling replacement keys but there appears to be different frequencies.
More importantly there are two different (incompatible) protocols used on the MK1. They had different Audi part numbers, and take different numbers of batteries.
1998 - 2002 4D0837231A use 2 x CR1620
2002 - 2006 4D0837231K use 1 x CR2032

Note that the number and type of batteries in non-OEM replacement remotes probably should NOT be taken as an indication of which original remotes they are compatible with. They could have been designed completely differently.

I actually went and bought both of these just to be sure - i'm still not able to program the remote key to the central locking using either of the two suggestions. Is it possible i need to use vagcom to remove or clear some of the allocations? is there a limit ? or do they get replaced when you program another key?

I believe this may help.
After locking the driver door with the key press the lock button once, wait 6 seconds then press lock button again, this places the remote in position one. After locking the driver door press the lock button twice wait 6 seconds and press the lock button again, this puts a remote in position two and so on up to four. Any remotes are automatically deleted. The ignition must be on before locking driver door and recycled off and on before each new remote to be programmed.

No.

is there a limit ?
Yes, 4 keys in total.

or do they get replaced when you program another key?
Yes, when you program a key to an existing position (1, 2, 3 or 4) it overwrites whatever key was previously stored there. There is no need to erase first.
