I've always loved fast cars and I have owned a few. I love playing around with them, modding and racing. Starting with a Ford Focus ST that was full stage 2. I loved this car to bits and had a lot of fun with it. After a few years I wanted something more and I got myself a Golf 7 GTI DSG. I started modding it and that's when my string of motoring bad luck started. I had a water meth system fitted and the controller failed one night and turned the pump on with the car parked off. It filled up the boost pipes and intercooler with methanol and when I started the car in the morning, it broke the pistons and bent rods. The meth also circulated through the motor and ate every rubber component it came into contact with.
After a very big rebuild bill, I didn't enjoy the car as much, so I traded it in on a BMW M235i. This car was awesome and I really enjoyed it. One night during a heavy storm, the car aquaplaned on the freeway (similar to what happened to Jeremy Clarkson when he test drove the M135i). Car was a write off.
So I was in the market for a car again and I decided to change the recipe a bit. Buy something affordable, with easily available parts and a large following and then mod the living daylights out of it! If something breaks, it's relatively cheap and easy to fix, no stress and at the end of the day, you get a monster exactly the way you want it.
I considered a few options, but I wanted something a bit different. So I went for a Audi TT mk2 2.0tfsi Quattro. This is the facelift version with the 211hp motor. It's decently spec'd with s-tronic box, navigation, PDC, tyre pressure monitor, xenons.
My end goal for this car is around 300kw (400bhp) but I'm more interested in the quarter mile time. I want to get it into the 11 second bracket and around 270kw (360bhp) should be enough to get it there.
I took delivery of the car on 12 August this year. First impressions were good. 1st and second gear were amazing (this is my first awd car), but after that it's just dead and boring. In gear acceleration felt about the same as the Golf 6 GTI I had at the time, so not very impressive.
I had to wake it up a bit. First up was a new downpipe.
The old one was horrible, so restrictive! The new one is 3", straight and catless. The car felt better immediately and the sound changed drastically. It was a lot more responsive and I was getting those famous DSG farts when changing gears.
I took the car to the track and ran a 14.1 sec quarter mile with just the downpipe and pump fuel (we get 95 octane here in South Africa, but the quality isn't as good as what you guys in Europe get).
I spent some time looking for someone who could tune the car. There are quite a few tuners in SA and I wanted something custom. Then I discovered the motor in the TT is unique. It's based on the the engine in the Golf 6 GTI (same power), but the ecu and a few other things differ, it also has valvelift like the Golf 7 GTI, so it makes 70nm more than the G6, (same as the G7).
I settled on Revo and got a stage 2 map loaded. After a few km of adaption, the car came alive. I feels very different to how it did stock and should be comfortably in the 13 second bracket now.
next up I need to get an intake and then I will get myself a k04 turbo and eventually do a hybrid conversion on it. That along with a few other bits should get me to the 360hp mark with ease.
In the mean time, I got myself a VCDS cable to monitor what's going on when I try out different things and some DSG paddle extensions, the stock ones are almost invisible.
That's where I am at the moment. I look forward to sharing my little project with you and learning more from you guys.
Cheers.
