I've always loved fast cars and I have owned a few. I love playing around with them, modding and racing. Starting with a Ford Focus ST that was full stage 2. I loved this car to bits and had a lot of fun with it. After a few years I wanted something more and I got myself a Golf 7 GTI DSG. I started modding it and that's when my string of motoring bad luck started. I had a water meth system fitted and the controller failed one night and turned the pump on with the car parked off. It filled up the boost pipes and intercooler with methanol and when I started the car in the morning, it broke the pistons and bent rods. The meth also circulated through the motor and ate every rubber component it came into contact with.

After a very big rebuild bill, I didn't enjoy the car as much, so I traded it in on a BMW M235i. This car was awesome and I really enjoyed it. One night during a heavy storm, the car aquaplaned on the freeway (similar to what happened to Jeremy Clarkson when he test drove the M135i). Car was a write off.

So I was in the market for a car again and I decided to change the recipe a bit. Buy something affordable, with easily available parts and a large following and then mod the living daylights out of it! If something breaks, it's relatively cheap and easy to fix, no stress and at the end of the day, you get a monster exactly the way you want it.

I considered a few options, but I wanted something a bit different. So I went for a Audi TT mk2 2.0tfsi Quattro. This is the facelift version with the 211hp motor. It's decently spec'd with s-tronic box, navigation, PDC, tyre pressure monitor, xenons.

My end goal for this car is around 300kw (400bhp) but I'm more interested in the quarter mile time. I want to get it into the 11 second bracket and around 270kw (360bhp) should be enough to get it there.

I took delivery of the car on 12 August this year. First impressions were good. 1st and second gear were amazing (this is my first awd car), but after that it's just dead and boring. In gear acceleration felt about the same as the Golf 6 GTI I had at the time, so not very impressive.

I had to wake it up a bit. First up was a new downpipe.

The old one was horrible, so restrictive! The new one is 3", straight and catless. The car felt better immediately and the sound changed drastically. It was a lot more responsive and I was getting those famous DSG farts when changing gears.

I took the car to the track and ran a 14.1 sec quarter mile with just the downpipe and pump fuel (we get 95 octane here in South Africa, but the quality isn't as good as what you guys in Europe get).

I spent some time looking for someone who could tune the car. There are quite a few tuners in SA and I wanted something custom. Then I discovered the motor in the TT is unique. It's based on the the engine in the Golf 6 GTI (same power), but the ecu and a few other things differ, it also has valvelift like the Golf 7 GTI, so it makes 70nm more than the G6, (same as the G7).

I settled on Revo and got a stage 2 map loaded. After a few km of adaption, the car came alive. I feels very different to how it did stock and should be comfortably in the 13 second bracket now.

next up I need to get an intake and then I will get myself a k04 turbo and eventually do a hybrid conversion on it. That along with a few other bits should get me to the 360hp mark with ease.

In the mean time, I got myself a VCDS cable to monitor what's going on when I try out different things and some DSG paddle extensions, the stock ones are almost invisible.

That's where I am at the moment. I look forward to sharing my little project with you and learning more from you guys.

Cheers.

Wow...great start.... if you want that sorts of power any reason you didnt just go for a TTRS? Prob be cheaper and more reliable overall?

I didn't want to spend that much on a car. I can get this to stage 2 TTRS power for much less money and it's cheaper to maintain and fix if anything should go wrong. Used cars in South Africa are not that cheap. For example, a 2011 s-tronic TTRS goes for around ÂŁ28,000.
As I said.

This is me vs a Stage 2 TTRS last night. TTRS has stage 2 software, full exhaust, software and suspension.
My car has stage 3 software, downpipe, intake, a k04 turbo and ucbracing fuel.

how is everyday driving noise without the cat, is it uncomfortably louder? And is it custom made or some kind of OEM?
It's not bad at all. Cruising, the car is very quiet, on the freeway you wouldn't even know the exhaust was changed. When in boost, it is pretty loud, much louder from the outside than inside but there is no drone at all.

It's made by a local company. Their work is brilliant and I've had their pipes on a few of my cars. They supply most of the tuning companies in SA.

I tried to fit those paddle extensions last night, but I see they are different. I just assumed the paddles on the TT were the same as those on the Golf 6 when I ordered them. I guess not.

Intake sorted

I was looking for an open intake and managed to get one from SLT. It's meant for the G6, but fits perfectly here. It makes use of the stock air feed, so the filter will still get some nice cold air through the grill. The battery on the TT is in the boot, so I will extend the heat shield a bit when I get some time. Really happy with it, the throttle response has improved and it feels like there is a bit more power. It sounds really good, but it's not annoyingly loud.

Update: The barber had some work done this weekend.

Since I bought the K04 (ages ago), I've been doing a bit of research and collecting all the bits and pieces I needed. Info is very hard to come by when putting your own kit together.

My shopping list was:

1 x OEM K04 turbo 06F 145 702 C
1 x OEM S3 throttle pipe 1KO 145 770 P
1 x OEM S3 DV relocation pipe 1KO 145 693 B
1 x OEM S3 DV holder 06F 145 751
1 x downpipe gasket 1KO 253 115 K
1 x manifold gasket 06F 253 039 E
4 x copper nuts N 102 861 08
8 x washers N 013 851 4
1 x small length of 50mm silicone hose (cheaper than the OEM pipe 1KO 145 845 A)
1 x Liqui molly oil
1 x G12+ coolant
1 x small piece of 20mm pipe, threaded on both sides (bung on stock intake pipe)
Various sizes of hose clamps

Also got my hands on a CTS discharge pipe and luckily got the 90 degree silicone bend I needed that connects it to the turbo.

The install is very OEM looking and I love it. Haven't really driven the car since. It will be going in for a stage 3 map some time this week and then we'll see what it does on the track.

Still to come:
Cooler
TCU flash
Throttle pipe
Carbon clean
Pulley
Forge actuator
Forge DV
Springs
Brakes

Should get 12s now and 11s later this year. Can't wait to start testing my new mix on the stage 3 setup!

Went to Revo at lunch time, loaded the stage 3 map and logged.

Car is insane! It's so much fun. There's a massive difference to stage 2. It pulls really hard and keeps going to the red line long after the ihi would have run out of steam. DSG farts sound like the exhaust is going to fall off. I love it!

Still needs to adapt, so it's only going to get stronger.

Can't wait to see what it does on the dyno and the track.

That's pretty cool, how much bhp and torque you pulling now? How you think it would stack up against my stage 1 RS? :)

I don't think I have enough posts to reply to your pm yet, but it would be great! i will get on it.
That's great!

Looking forward to seeing some figures for your car! Even though I know it's not all about the numbers, but they do help :)

If you have any recommendations for mods for my RS im all ears...!

What sort of power is this running now? Did you ever get it on a dyno?
I haven't had a chance yet. But I will hopefully get some numbers before the end of the month. I'm always logging the car and noticed it's only requesting 2200 mbar of boost where Revo say the stage 3 map requests 2500+. Went to Revo and they confirmed. Logs were sent to the UK, so I should have a new map in a week or so and a decent bit more power.

Went to the track on Friday night and managed a 12.800. I wish I skipped supper

Really happy with how it's running. My 60fts were almost the same as when the car was stage 2, so I think it's good for a mid/low 12 with the current setup and a TCU flash to help get it off the line.

I haven't had the time to make any changes to the car since the last update.

Put it on the dyno and it made 320whp and 458nm. Torque is a bit low, but getting my actuator set correctly should take care of that.

I also went to the track on Friday. The place was packed and I only got 3 runs with a best of 12.7.

I've been really busy recently so I haven't had much time to mod or make any changes.

I sent the car to FR&R last week and Leon worked his magic and did a custom TCU map. It's a day and night difference. The car launches harder than I ever expected and everything just feels better. A huge thank you to Leon. It should easily run a low 12 as is.

I also put on some fresh brakes all around and got myself a stage 2 Snow Performance WMI kit that should go on in the next week or 2 along with a gearbox service. I still haven't gotten around to adjusting the actuator but hopefully that will also get sorted soon.

It's been a while since I updated this thread.

Since my last post, I had the wmi kit installed and did a gearbox service. The car ran 12.3 on the quarter mile in August and then I put things on hold to focus on some other things.

I've started again and ordered a forge actuator and gfb boost controller which I should get next week. The stock actuator on the K04 has seized and can't be adjusted with the turbo on the car. So I thought if the turbo is coming off, I might as well just fit an aftermarket part.

Time really does fly when you're having fun. It's been 6 years since I've updated this thread. I still have the car and have added tons of mods to it over the years. It is no longer a daily and my current goal is a streetable race car (I'm pretty close).

Love my TT as much as ever and I'll start updating this thread with pictures to share info and ideas with the community. Stay tuned.

So the engine was rebuilt with some forged bits and a stage 1 hybrid K04 turbo (upgraded compressor wheel).

It's interesting to see the difference between the stock internals and the forged parts. The aftermarket stuff is a lot more chunky.

Image

The Revo software I had on the car was no longer up to the task and I struggled to find a capable tuner for the build. After a lot of research, I settled on a stage 2 tune from Dynodrome, based in Greece.

Image

I added a few additional bolt-on parts such as a GFB DV+ for some racecar noises and a GFB electronic boost controller. This, along with the modified turbo and Forge actuator were a game changer. The car could suddenly hold boost all the way to redline. Pulled like a train.
