Im sure its 20k miles? Ive done 8.2k and its saying I need a service in 800miles or 81 days? Isnt 9k a bit soon for the service, mainly motorway driving @90mph.

It may be the norm but im a bloke so struggle reading the manual :)

I seem to remember other posts saying that the service reminder can be set for one of two styles of driving Inspection Service (10k/yr) or Long-Life Service (up to 20k/yr) - it sounds as if your car is set to the former. I beleive the dealer can reset it for you; though you should have been asked when you collected the car or even before

I thought it was varible servicing, i.e. judged on how the engine is performing, driving style etc....

I have done 7,500 miles and it is saying service due in 4000 miles or 90 days. The car is nearly a year old, so not as bad as a service every year, but not quite the potential 20,000 miles quoted.

It would be interesting to know how everyone elses servicing intervals are showing!?!

No-one asked about servicing prior to Pick up, I would have deffo said 20k!!

I'm sure that it can be changed by the dealer. At then end of the day it's just a reminder. As long as the services agree with the allowable options then the car has been kept to the approved schedules and therefore doesn't break the warranty. I suggest you speak to the dealer. They should be able to reset it there and then. The BMW dealers have done that with mine before when they've forgotten to reset it after a service.

The dealer can change it at, or immediately after, a service (VAGCOM).

On "variable" the ECU measures engine usage to indicate oil condition. I don't think it will work if changed midway between services.

I believe "fixed" used to be the default setting on new TTs but now its generally "variable".
Before delivery, I asked for mine to be on "variable" and dealer said it would be anyway (and it was).

Seems Chunk and mung are on "fixed" interval. :(

On the bright side guys, an oil change at c9,000 miles should be better for the engine. I'm thinking of having an extra oil change half-way before my "variable" service.

If the "days remaining" to service and days since you took delivery add up to 365 (appox) and the "miles to service" and current mileage add up to 10,000., then I would almost certainly say it had been put on fixed interval rather than variable. This had been done on my car when I had asked for variable. Also, in the service book, the first dealer stamp for the PDI should show a tick against either fixed or longlife. It can be changed by the dealer, but not recommented mid service.

Service model used depends on the type of driving you do.

Most cars seem to be set to fixed for some reason (money for the dealer id guess - what the customer doesnt know wont hurt him). Mine is going in next week to be switched to variable as most of the driving i do is motorway, not stop/start local driving.

it just about to hit 5k from memory, but the book says if you do mostly motorway miles you should be on variable. local short journeys fixed. Spoke the dealer and they said it wouldn't matter if it was changed mid way though. I guess it will only be a condition type in the software.

Page 28 of the Audi brochure (pdf from Audi website) explains this, as Toshiba said, it is down to type of driving. In summary

Inspection service - less than 10k miles pa, mostly short/town/city
journeys. Interval - 10k miles / 1 year
LongLife - More than 30 miles per day, mainly motor ways, constant speeds. Intervals 20k miles / 2 years

The oil is different for extended service

I don't know what oil is in the sump from the factory but top ups should use the long life oil

quite important I'm told

The variable option requires more expensive fancy pants oil that changes viscosity with use and to a varying extent depending on the type of use, there is a sensor which measures the viscosity which then calculates the interval to the next service. If audi say you can choose at delivery then the oil at delivery from the factory must be the fancy sort, and also changeing from fixed to variable mid cycle is fine. Changeing mid cycle after a subsequent service from fixed to variable as the cheaper oil will have been used. In my experience of quite low mostly town driving the difference in cost between the two is marginal - fancy oil more expensive , fixed more frequent servicing. ( my experience with A4 and A3 but also the bmw equivalent on the mini )

The service indicator will be affected by the way you drive the car (if it's set on variable) So have you checked the oil? Keep it topped p and the service period is prolonged.

My dealer quoted £112 for a (say 10,000 mile) oil and filter change only, cf £270-£290 for a full service. So the oil is definitely expensive!

In response to my subsequent gasp they did say it was "special low friction oil". LOL :p
It is actually a pretty special spec of synth: 5w30, but a special variety. I dunno about "low friction oil though :?
There's more than one spec of 5w30 from companies like castrol and mobil; the "regular" stuff and the "longlife" stuff (the correct type will have a VAG type approval number on it - see your TT's owner manual for details). Street prices are about £13 for the former and more like £17 for the latter. It took me 3x garages before I found the right type (my car went thru the complementary 1L bottle of oil by 10K miles, and was set for variable servicing from the start, so I needed to buy more.)

My car's now done about 14K miles since I got it in January, and is looking like it will be having service #1 around about 17K miles.

I am about to put my MkII in for it's first service. It's done 9.3K miles since I picked it up in March. That's rubbish! The MKI I had before this did 17K before it needed it's first service.
I don't think I'm driving it any harder than the last one and I'm feeling that something isn't quite right here.
I spoke to the Service Guy at the dealsers where I'm going to take it on Saturday and he said they'd check 'the channels' to make sure it does need a service before they do it. Bet I can guess now what that answer will be. He also confirmed that my car WAS setup for variable servicing.

You must be absolutely ragging it Jake!

Nah, only kiddin. It does seem rather soon though. On the up side though (and I tend I tend to agree with Mack's comments earlier in the thread) more frequent oil changes can only be good for your engine... if not so hot on your wallet

The general rule is:

>15k a year have it on set servicing
15K> a year have it on variable servicing

Your type of driving also affects the service intervals, as Tosh said motorway miles will increase the service intervals whereas town driving will decrease the interval.

The car has an Oil viscosity sensor in the sump that tells it when it needs a service/oil change

If the oil viscosity sensor is used to decide when an oil change is needed then maybe it's that that's faulty.
I generally do motorway type runs, looking at 18K miles this year I guess, don't rag it toooo much and therefore would expect ~20K service.
Not a lot I can do I guess except pay the bill and move on
