My dealer quoted £112 for a (say 10,000 mile) oil and filter change only, cf £270-£290 for a full service. So the oil is definitely expensive!

In response to my subsequent gasp they did say it was "special low friction oil". LOL :p
It is actually a pretty special spec of synth: 5w30, but a special variety. I dunno about "low friction oil though :?
There's more than one spec of 5w30 from companies like castrol and mobil; the "regular" stuff and the "longlife" stuff (the correct type will have a VAG type approval number on it - see your TT's owner manual for details). Street prices are about £13 for the former and more like £17 for the latter. It took me 3x garages before I found the right type (my car went thru the complementary 1L bottle of oil by 10K miles, and was set for variable servicing from the start, so I needed to buy more.)

My car's now done about 14K miles since I got it in January, and is looking like it will be having service #1 around about 17K miles.

Finally got round to checking the DIS for when first service due, as things stand its due in another 10,000 miles, so will be around 19,000 and two years old.

I am about to put my MkII in for it's first service. It's done 9.3K miles since I picked it up in March. That's rubbish! The MKI I had before this did 17K before it needed it's first service.
I don't think I'm driving it any harder than the last one and I'm feeling that something isn't quite right here.
I spoke to the Service Guy at the dealsers where I'm going to take it on Saturday and he said they'd check 'the channels' to make sure it does need a service before they do it. Bet I can guess now what that answer will be. He also confirmed that my car WAS setup for variable servicing.

You must be absolutely ragging it Jake!

Nah, only kiddin. It does seem rather soon though. On the up side though (and I tend I tend to agree with Mack's comments earlier in the thread) more frequent oil changes can only be good for your engine... if not so hot on your wallet

The general rule is:

>15k a year have it on set servicing
15K> a year have it on variable servicing

Your type of driving also affects the service intervals, as Tosh said motorway miles will increase the service intervals whereas town driving will decrease the interval.

The car has an Oil viscosity sensor in the sump that tells it when it needs a service/oil change

If the oil viscosity sensor is used to decide when an oil change is needed then maybe it's that that's faulty.
I generally do motorway type runs, looking at 18K miles this year I guess, don't rag it toooo much and therefore would expect ~20K service.
Not a lot I can do I guess except pay the bill and move on

The stealer gave me some Mobil 5W/30 ESP Formula. Is that exactly the correct oil for topping up between extended service intervals?

6 months old 8,200 miles on clock..............service due within the next 900 miles.

If the "days remaining" to service and days since you took delivery add up to 365 (appox) and the "miles to service" and current mileage add up to 10,000., then I would almost certainly say it had been put on fixed interval rather than variable. This had been done on my car when I had asked for variable. Also, in the service book, the first dealer stamp for the PDI should show a tick against either fixed or longlife. It can be changed by the dealer, but not recommented mid service.
Not so. TT2 is set up to monitor the length of journey, type of journey and frequency of use much more than in the past. My car has done 4k miles in eight months and looks like its on fixed servicing (10k, 365 days etc)but is not. I have had into my supplying dealer three times and they have confirmed that it is set to variable with the maximum days and mileage parameters set. The thing that is influencing it on my car is the fact that it is only used about once a week.

All I can say say is that when interogated with VAG-COM the max day perameter on mine was at 365 and the oil grade shown set at fixed. Even after it was allegedly set to variable on 2 dealer visits.

Funny thing is, having just taken delivery of my second Mk2. from day one it showed something like 1090days (?) and 19,000 miles. My first car showed 10k and 1 year from delivery date. :?

Getting confused (not hard).

Mine too has read 365 days and counted down from 10k since new, has been to dealer 3 times now, suposedly re-set once and they are claiming is set to variable, yet I cant see how this can be.

My understanding that if on variable it counts down from 19,000 miles??

Does anyone know the answer to this as losing patience with the dealer and thinking of taking it up with Audi UK

I'm due for my first service in 12 days, 14 months from delivery at 8.5K miles currently (mainly 'round town)
As a first time Audi owner, my question is...
When the Service is Due or whatever comes on in a few days, how long/far have I got to get it serviced before risking the warranty being invalidated?

Ours, a 3.2, is flashing up for a 1st service at around 9100 miles...8829 or something at the moment

Seems to be set up for variable servicing OK, with a quick check by VAGCOM

I would have expected a bit more than 9k miles, but perhaps the driving style greatly influences the interval - Going in for the service on Wednesday at Aberdeen Audi so will see what they say then

Thanks for showing this. My car has been back into Dundee Audi three times for them to check this and their comment is as is yours - everything is properly set to variable servicing. New TT seems to be very dependent on driving style and frequency/length of use, something which A3 is not. Strange.

PS Drove past Laurencekirk both ways yesterday...tanking down!
