Can I swap a second hand Bose amplifier with a faulty Bose amplifier? Is there any coding etc to be done or is it a simple swap?

This post discussed the issues with various revisions of the Bose Amp which may, or may not, be an issue. Generally speaking, you want to try and find one with the same revision -

As for coding the Amp itself, it is not possible to make any changes to the Bose Amp.

If the Bose Amp is from the same type of car as yours (Coupe to Coupe or Roadster to Roadster) it should be fine. But if not, you may want to make some minor code changes using a VAG software friendly OBDII diagnostic device.

Look under Address/Control Unit 47 Sound System (OBDeleven shown below). This is not critical to whether or not the Amp will work, but it may affect the sound quality in your car. Some people change these settings to "improve" the sound quality, but it's up to an individuals taste as to what sounds "better".

All good info but isn't the wording is a bit confusing? It is possible to make coding changes, for stuff like roadster/coupe, type of interior, drive side, etc. And that stuff you should match to your car--either by getting the coding from your old amp; or, if totally non-functional and can't see the coding, just put in whatever matches your car.

Can also fool around with it and select opposite things on purpose--e.g. I think ppl have reported "better sound" by picking convertible when they have a coupe. Of course my own personal recommendation is to not spend a dime on fixing Blose at all and just replace it with real gear, but to each their own ;)

Sorry if I wasn't specific enough -

• The Bose Amp can not be recoded with a commercial OBDII diagnostic device; e.g. VCDS, OBDeleven, etc.
• The only code changes you can make with VCDS or OBDeleven would be to those Control Units which appear after your first auto scan; e.g. 37-Navigation, 47-Sound System, 56-Radio, and 77-Telephone. Note - Be aware these will only be present if they were installed in your vehicle at the factory.

And yes, playing around with options like leather seats, diesel engine, roadster, etc., will have an effect but only the user can determine if the sound "quality" improves with those changes.

I know the Bose gets a really bad rap, but I think it's more due to water ingress issues with Coupes. I don't know of many Roadster that suffer the same problems due to them having a trunk, rather than a hatch. Mine is still going strong without any issues. ;)

Out of interest, where are those settings stored? If one swaps out an RNS-E for a new HU but keeps the Bose amp do the settings still work?

Good question.

Anyone with an Xtron or other HU swap should be able to confirm if codes changes in the afore mentioned Control Modules are still effective after the swap.

IMHO, I would suspect code changes would not be effective for an after-market HU, given the codes for those Control Modules are specifically designed for the factory HUs. e.g. Concert, RNS-E, etc.

I’d wager the GALA settings are HU settings but Bose Audiopilot?
