Well after many hours and frustrations it seems the third brake light cable hole is where a lot of water was getting in and ruining the number plate light !!!
Now need a new one. If anyone has a fairly new part with a good gasket I'd be grateful if you could let me know - preferably in the north west so I can collect.
Not sure if this hole and connection should have a rubber gromit but it's not a good fit.
