Hi all,

a little help if I could.
Whilst doing the haldex I thought I'd do the rear differential oil as well.
Please can someone suggest a suitable product.
The official one (G052145A1) from the knowledge base is not available locally to me or on eBay.
Ive found a couple here http://www.buycarparts.co.uk/oen/g052145a1
Are they any good? Or is there something better?
Cheers

Jez

Rear diff is Synthetic GL5 spec 75W90.
An endless choice of that available depending on how much you want to spend.

Motul Gear 300 or Redline 75W90 are top spec fluids if you want to go that far.

Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W-90 should be easily available.

I've got Motul Gear 300 to go in mine, but as yet I have been unable to get the fill plug out...!!
ALWAYS remove the fill plug BEFORE the drain plug.....

Thank you for that, else I would just be posting on here lol

may I ask another question, what I should put in the gearbox?
My car is not driven hard (no track days or anything)

I've read somewhere about putting the same oil in the gearbox and diff?
Is this true or an absolute no no?

I've looked up the spec (G052171A2 ) in the knowledge base and it works out quite expensive for the 3L
cheapest i can find on eBay is about ÂŁ12 per L
Are there alternatives or is that just what it costs?

many thanks
Jez (and his TT once I get round to putting this stuff in it lol)

Yep, GL4 synthetic for the manual box and transfer box.
Redline MT90 and Motul Gear 300 (again!) are the top spec options.
You need to consider that manual boxes don't need an oil change that often and they don't take much fluid either. So even a top spec fluid isn't really going to cost you much more. Maybe ÂŁ20 difference between the best and the worst.

getting confused re gl4 and gl5 specs (mainly because I'm an idiot!)
so take pity and please confirm!

225 6 speed manual TT, is this the right stuff for my:
Rear Differential (1L)
Gearbox (2.6L)
The Motul Gear 300 is listed as both GL4 and GL5, so yes should be fine for both the gearbox+transferbox and the rear diff.

Redline transmission products are very good.

I would suggest Opie Oils for specific model products, comprehensive knowledge and good customer service.

Cheers for that,
Tried the web site before but didn't get on very well with it
But the eBay seller has the same name so assuming they are one and the same?

Redline MT-90 for sure! when i got my TT shifting was rough especially 1-2, remembering how well the MT-90 fixed, until i ripped the teeth off 5th gear, in my O2J tranny in it went, shifting it still great!! don't forget to drain the bevel box too. when i changed to it in my O2J 5 spd i could barely shift + like magic it kept getting better until at about 1,000 miles on the fluid it leveled out to decent shifting. i still wonder why it got better with use. Ester based fluids are excellent + whatever else Redline blends in just works!!

What about Westway Lubricants for MT90 - check ebay as much cheaper than RedLine MT90 and given both cite MT90 then it must be the same oil?

Thinking of changing my daughter's MK1 TT 1.8T 2WD 5Speed as it now has 103k miles and not sure whether to use Audi oil @ ÂŁ11.78/Lt or for same price (almost, 1.9Lt required) 5Lt of Westway MT90

Any comments?

I recently replaced the gearbox and diff oils with Redline MT90 which was the first oil change since new, 14 years and 30k miles. The gear change was previously ok but with a definite mechanical feel, with Redline MT90 the improvement in gear change is dramatic, silent and very smooth with no mechanical harshness. The drained OEM oil was still relatively clean and brown in colour. For post May 2002 cars you will need a special drain key, see attached link. Whilst the diff and gearbox are supposedly "sealed for life" units in terms of oil I would strongly recommend changing to a good quality synthetic. As for cost, it isn't something you need to do regularly but the improvement in the gear shift is directly related to the quality and therefore cost of the oil. I am not aware of Redline supplying oils to cheaper third party brands, the Redline MT90 is a translucent pale red colour.

Thanks TJS
Daughters car is 2003 model - I need to check but thought it was normal hex key as I looked at it during engine oil change and whilst fitting new control arm bushes/ball joints on each side as bushes looked worn to me.

I agree, cost difference really should not really come into it and Audi tell me they have changed the spec of the oil for this car so I imagine it will be good stuff but the MT90 gets a rave following and like all oils I guess, spec is spec so GL4 is GL4 be it Redline or Westway at almost 1/3 the price. Maybe I just pay for Redline as it's a one and only time I guess? Just wondered if MT90 is a brand or a specification....I'm thinking a spec else Westway could not cite it? though cannot find any info either way!

14 years and 30k miles......is that right...just over 2k per year? Nice...car must be like new....lovely! Presumably a fun car for summer only?

Daughter has TT Mk1 petrol, wife has TT Mk2 Tdi Quattro (for safety!), I've the utility car (Golf) but now I'm retired I fancy a toy of some sort for summer...not sure what though....fancy a hardtop folding roof, maybe BMW Z4 or merc....though not really a merc lover!

I might give Westway a call...I'm happy to buy Redline, but now curious....any oil techies out there....any difference between Redline and Westway MT90? What is MT90....a trade name or a spec or just a name that means nothing?

Thanks 3TT3 - after reading your first link I've decided to go for Audi OEM oil as it's cheaper than Redline and there are no problems with the gearbox or gear change - I sort of feel @ 103k miles it's not a bad idea to change the oil ....so playing safe!

I guess I can get really tied up with spec's etc ...so for me it's best to stick with OEM and as Audi have changed the spec for the gearbox oil for this car.

It's hard to believe that my local Audi dealer @ West Newcastle could not tell me what oil I needed to buy as 2 or 3 types are listed - on pressing them they couldn't help at all ....ermmm....bring it in for the oil change???? ...No thanks - not sure you would put in the right oil?
So called Audi UK who believe it or not couldn't help either - just told me to contact local dealer. Audi Sunderland know their stuff - no issues at all - simples. I guess any work will go to Audi Sunderland from now on.

Thanks for the replies.
