TTS Engine noise

Went to see this 2012 TTS Black Edition and noticed the engine making a slightly 'rattly' sound after my little test drive. I lifted the bonnet for a short recording but sadly wind noise has masked it somewhat. Nonetheless, does anyone with a similar TTS recognise this as normal at all? It's like a metallic 'ringing' in a high register and sounded a touch alarming if I'm honest!

Did you check the oil level? If it's one that burns a fair amount of oil maybe the current owner hasn't kept it topped up? Half a litre makes a noticeable difference in idle noise.

TTS is all about induction noise tbh
Yeah, I checked, and it was just over minimum on the dipstick. The owner topped it up with 3 quarters of a litre in April after getting a 'low oil' warning on the dash. He'd had a service and oil change in February, which is a concern.

It's a shame the recording turned out so naff because it had a noticeable fast metallic 'ticking' sound I'd not heard before. I just didn't know what was causing it.

The ticking noise is the normal sound of the injectors. all direct injection engines sound like a bag of spanners at idle. I'd walk away from that oil consumption though. I've done 4.5k in mine in the last year, mostly short spirited journeys and the oil level has sat dead on max the whole time.

Just sent the vid,

My thoughts for what they are worth is this, the biggest majority of us are lovers of the TT, why wouldn't you check your oil on a regular basis so as not to let the oil warning lamp come on, I check mine every week along with tyre pressures etc.

Dont know how true this is: ...... but I was once told that if the engine oil lamp comes on then the damage has already been done to the engine........if anything perhaps food for thought

Hope the vid I sent you helped anyway

Kind Regards

Nick

Hi Nick, thanks again for the vid. It sounds comparable to the one I saw, sans wind noise of course. But you're entirely correct in your assessment; the majority of us are gratuitously cautious about observing the service demands of s-tronic, haldex, engine, cambelt etc, but you'd be shocked to discover the state of some cars I've seen. When you dig a little deeper you often find cars that have never had anything done other than an occasional oil change at the local (cheapest possible) garage. It's bewildering how someone can make a ÂŁ35k investment and then just run it into the ground through negligence. I've seen a few now. Can't quite get my head around it!

Lol, that's what my old man always tells me too (mechanic). You're really supposed to check your car over before each journey though. But at least once a week, more, if you are doing a lot of mileage, should be the minimum. It doesn't take much to check your oil, water, brakes, tire pressure, tire tread and top up the washer jets every time you wash the car.

If it's got all the bells and whistles and its not been smashed and everything else is in great condition for the right price it could be worth it and get the engine stripped down to check for damage or excess wear.

They could be using oil that is too thin and it's being burned off, or possibly an oil leak somewhere.

I use 5-30 fully synthetic in my tts and it gets some hammering and my oil level has never dropped (except for when I am intentionally draining the oil of course).

Hold up! We're talking about a ÂŁ1.2k bill there surely? And that's before any work replacing valve seals, re-boring, etc. Point taken but I think I'd rather just find something that didn't require those sort of remedial measures instead.
