Wheel and Tire Size Questions

Hello all,
I know there are plenty of threads about this already. However, I can not, for the life of me, find an answer to my question. I am new to the whole wheel and tire fitment thing. I'll keep it simple. My 01 225 mk1 TT is rolling on stock height, wheels, and tires currently. It has 225/45/17. My goal is to have nice fitment and more grip, with no rubbing what so ever on stock height. I would rather not have to do spacers either if possible (no camber either). I either want to run 19" x 8.5" wheel with 255/35/19 all the way around or 18" x 8.5" 255/35/18, will this work and not rub at full lock? (I know either setup works for rears, but I'm wondering about fronts specifically.) If these setups will not work, please let me know what the max width will be for either 18" or 19" wheels. Please keep in mind that I am new to this and things like E.T. confuse me still. Thanks so much! Pictures will be very helpful :)

I think the biggest you will manage on the front will be 235s but 18s and 19s can make the TT look like a 4x4 if your not lowering

Why don't you want to use spacers? Easy and cheap way to change stance.
At original ride height, I say stick with the 17" wheels, 10mm spacer front, 15mm spacer rear. And put all your money into amazing grippy tires! Like Michelin pilot sports or something.

Or else lower the car a bit and get new 18" rims with the offset you desire.

Awesome, thanks for the advice guys. Its not that I'm not willing to do spacers, I was just trying to avoid it. I realize bigger wheels can make a tt look silly without lowering, but my plan is to lower the car after I get the new wheels and tires. So I don't want to end up buying another set of wheels in the future. If I run a spacer in the front, will it allow for a 245 or 255 instead of 235, or is 235 still the limit? If 235 is the max I can run, then Ill go with a 235/35/18 on the front with a spacer if it looks better, and then can I do a 255/35/18 rear? or will it be more beneficial to keep all of them symmetrical for rotations? If a 245 will fit up front with a spacer, then ill go 245 all the way around. Thanks!
Oh by the way, tires im looking at are pilot sport 4s, they have good reviews and seem grippy and last pretty long. Thoughts?

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S justifiy there rave reviews. I have them on my F30 BMW and they are excellent. And will be putting them on my next TT (Once I find A good one)

I personally think that mixing tyre sizes across axles, on a four wheel drive car is not the best ideas it will confuse a lot of the sensors relating to ABS, ESP, etc, and the Haldex system itself.

Either 225/40R18 or 235/35R18 should be fine all round just put some spacers on to achieve the look you want! I'm sure the good folk on here will give you some ideas on the sizes of spacer to use.

Be mindful that when you do lower the car, you will need adjustable rear camber arms too. If not, the highest aspect of your tyre will be set in over with an excessive negative camber, which will apply increased load on the lateral aspect of the tyres resulting in heavy wear and possible instability during cornering forces. (falling in torque v centripetal torque)

With regards to the fitments, you will find that your speedo will be out. The closest match you will need will be 255/30/19 which will give you only a 0.2% increase, rather than a 4.2% increase with 35 profile tyres.

On further inspection Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are only available in 19, 20, 21 & 22"" options

The Pilot Sport 4 is available in 18"" is not bad bit of kit at all, just not quite as focused as the 4S.

Thanks for the input guys. Still wondering, can anyone either confirm or deny if I can fit a 245mm up front without any rubbing on full lock? Does it require spacers? I would love to just get 245s all the way around on an 18 x 8.5 wheel. Specs of the tire will be 245/35/18 pilot sport 4 or 4s most likely.

Hi,

Take a look at my posts here:

http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1332842&p=7314065

I'm having no problems running Continental ContiSport Contact 5 245/40/R18 all the way around.
20 mm spacers at the front and 30 mm in the back with a pair of ET50 wheels,
which makes for an effective ET of 30 in the front and 20 in the back.
Thanks a bunch! This is very helpful information that I was looking for! Would you happen to have pictures of the final setup on your car? I looked through your posts, but most pictures weren't showing up and some were just really close ups. Thanks!
