1.8 TFSI Engine Needs

Hi Guys

I'm a TT novice and I get my 1.8 TFSI S- Line Coupe in May and would like to start off on the right foot with this engine as I will probably want to keep the car for a long while.

My 2 questions are:

1. Would this engine benefit from higher octane fuel or is it not necessary due to its relatively mild state of tune?

2. I will be doing 10k miles or under a year - The Audi brochure suggests fixed annual but my dealer says stick with the default long life. My instinct suggests go with fixed what do you recommend?

Thanks for your help

The 1.8 TFSI will not benefit from using higher octane fuel. Some other engines do but the handbook is clear on this. Nevertheless I did try running mine on a couple of tankfuls of V-power but it made no difference to the mpg.
There's no hard and fast rule about what service interval to go for. To some extent it will depend upon the type of driving you do as well as your overall annual mileage. I'm surprised how long it says before I'm due a service even though I do mainly short urban journeys.

I bought a new 1.8 TFSI S-Tronic coupe last July & I've recently passed the 10,000 mile mark; the first oil service was performed at 9,600 miles & the on-board display is indicating approximately 10,000 miles to the first inspection service.... I'm very happy with the car & I regularly achieve 40+ mpg & I have never used anything other than Esso or Shell 95 RON fuel! Enjoy the new car when it arrives!

Thank you for your advice - I'll stick to the standard unleaded as you suggest.

I'm leaning towards the fixed annual services at the moment - I presume this can only be good rather than harmful for the car?
I definitely feel fixed servicing is the better option to preserve the engine due to the shorter distances between oil changes but just found out that audi garages use inferior oils on the fixed plans and not the long-life oils. Whether or not this makes a big difference I guess is debatable but know I'd rather have the long-life oil on the fixed service.

You can help the car in several ways: Don't do 'bicycle trips' with the car. Short drives are bad for any engine.
Use fuel with lots of cleaning agents, so v-power or what ever premium fuel there is available. You want to do everything possible to keep the inside of the engine clean as much as possible. Cleaner injectors = less soot = cleaner oil etc. While you may not notice better mpg now, I'm sure a cleaner engine will be better in the long run. And for the price difference....

I'm with the dealer with regards to long life vs fixed interval.

Why stick to a yearly interval and 10k miles services as a fixed interval while the car has capabilities to figure out itself what is best for itself? 10 trips of 10 miles are not the same as 1 trip of 100 miles. And the car knows and takes it into account.

If you want to do the car a favour: long life interval, but don't run it all the way to the end. Take it in early. And keep oil level at max, also when it's due for a service.

Just a personal opinion, but what the oil does in a car engine, no matter what they claim, I go with a 10K fixed regime, for the overall small cost of oil & filter against the cost of the vehicle. Its the most important thing you put in a car in relation to the longevity of the engine components.
