So, I finally got my OBDEleven and ran a scan this morning. There were a few errors but many related to low voltage. I know the previous owner said the battery was flat and he got it replaced, so I assumed it was related.

Anyway, drove the car to work, which was approx. 26 miles on A and B roads. No issues with the car but ran the scan anyway.
2 Issues came up, 1 was related to the radio antenna 2 which I will look at later but the other was this.

22 All Wheel Control

System description: Haldex 4Motion
Software number: 0BR907554B
Software version: 3017
Hardware number: 0BR907554B
Coding: 0000005

Trouble codes:
00448 - Haldex clutch pump Open circuit
Intermittent
Priority: 2
Frequency counter: 1
Driving cycle: 4
Mileage: 67073 km

Now I have to assume the Haldex on my car has not had the filter cleaned as I have no evidence from previous owner, but is this a pump replacement regardless?

Also, bottom of the error code says "Mileage: 67073 km". What does that mean?

Anytime you run a fault scan for the first time, you should always clear any faults that come up. These may be old faults that were simply never cleared. Then go for a drive (10-minutes is sufficient) and run another fault scan when you get back. Any faults that come up then should be looked into.

1.) Fault Frequency* shows how many times the conditions that caused the fault have recurred. So, if you have a fault with a Frequency of 11, then conditions that would trigger that fault have happened 11 times since the fault was stored. Evidently yours is only "1", so this is the first time this fault has been reported.

2.) However the Priority 2* means the fault requires an immediate service appointment. So don't wait too long or yes, this could cost you a pump.

3.) 67073 km is your mileage in kilometers.

*More info here

Odds are good that even if the Haldex was serviced, the filters were not replaced. So you may want to get that done at your earliest convenience as a blocked filter can cause the pump to burn out. In your case, the pump may still be okay, but it should be sorted sooner than later.

As you have a 2010, you probably have the Gen4. A quick look at the Haldex case for the filter cover will let you know for sure. The Gen2 and Gen4 filter covers are very different from each other as shown below; Gen2 simply unscrews off the Haldex case, while the Gen4 has two 4mm allen screws holding it in place.

More on the Haldex issues and servicing here.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did clear after the first scan. I was thinking it while I was writing but for some reason I didn't write in the post.

So, to be clear, I scanned the car and cleared all errors then I drove the car to work and scanned again.

67073 is your mileage in kilometers.
That can't be the milage as the car has done 102200 miles so that should read 164475 km

A fault doesn't necessarily mean a part has failed, it means that the expected operating conditions are not being met. Note the word "intermittent" meaning the conditions that triggered the fault were present at that time, and are not constant.

To fully understand what's going on with a fault, you have to drill down starting with the Control Unit → Live Data → Channels.

When you get to "Enter channel" enter 1, then tap "OK". Now you will be in the Live Data fields where you can see what's going on. If you tap the two blue left and right arrows, you can cycle through all the available channels for that Control Unit.

Notice the comment below the description Specification: 11 Min/Max 15V. If the voltage for this channel was outside this specification, then a fault would be reported and logged. Now suppose you know your battery is old and you replace it. Then the Specification requirements would be met and no further faults would be reported. However the original fault is still logged and will remain so until it's cleared.

In the case of the Haldex pump, it could be that there was just enough crud or sludge on the pump filter that it caused the pump to work harder, causing a brief current spike. If that current spike was outside of the specification, then a fault would have been reported. If the crud only caused this condition to occur briefly, and the pump then returned to normal operating conditions (within the stated specification) then the fault would still be logged, the pump will still work, however the fault would be listed as intermittent.

Yep I understand what you are saying. Just did a quick look at mine, Voltage at 12.5 V and is enabled and running. Cheers for the info and pics for guidence.

I just realised I could view my first scan and can compare, which has now confused me even more.

So first scan this morning, before clear

You stated - " So first scan this morning, before clear..."

However the date and time don't match that statement if you did that this morning 10/19/2022 - "Date: 2022-06-03 17:49:26" ...
This is the scan I did last night, just playing with the scanner. Easier to copy and paste than this mornings

Just curious - did you buy your OBDeleven directly from their website or did you get it off eBay or Amazon? There have been reports of resellers selling used units.

Anyway, the first scan makes sense, the mileage when scanned was 164,610km and reported fault mileage was 163,263km so that would indicate this fault was reported about 1,300 km / 800 miles ago.

What doesn't make sense is the 164,650km and 67,073km which was reported at a later date...??? Also odd that the date was omitted.

But either way, it looks like you need to get your Haldex filters sorted sooner than later.

You may want to send an email to the team at VoltasIT, include these two scans and ask if they can explain how the mileage of 67,073km could have been reported.

I brought from amazon but got it from ITVoltas shop.
It was the pro version and when I installed and added the device it asked to add the pro to my account, so I assume that if it was used then the 12-month subscription would not add to my account?

I will send over and email, see what they say.

Just getting a quote in for a filter replace and I am getting a quote of ÂŁ356.76

-Haldex Gen 4 service kit and filter ÂŁ128.76 inc vat
-2 hours labour ÂŁ190 + vat

Does that seem right?
Looking here, parts are ÂŁ70

Gen 4 Ultimate Service Kit for VW Audi Seat Skoda – Haldex Parts and ECU Repairs by Auto Fault Finder Ltd (haldexrepairs.co.uk)

Also notice they say the following
Servicing is preventative maintenance, this will NOT fix your “00448 – Haldex pump V181 – open circuit intermittent” fault, as that requires pump replacement.

For comparison, the gentleman who swapped my pump this morning charged me ÂŁ99 inc vat (I sourced the pump kit from Haldex Repairs myself and I concur with @SwissJetPilot that Matt at Haldex Repairs is really helpful, knows his stuff, and I would happily buy again from him).

There is a good video of what is involved here:

So it looks like they have quoted two hours to you in case the pump is a pig to remove, and it certainly has that potential as you will see from the posting about mine. Worth bearing in mind that I probably spent at least an hour of my own time on top of the garages time.

You can expect many businesses in many walks of life, to add a margin to bought in goods they supply as part of a service. That is because they have incurred time in sourcing and ordering parts, and they carry the full liability for parts and labour if there is any problem within any reasonable warranty period. Conversely, if the pump I bought myself suffered an early life mechanical failure, I would have to get a replacement pump from Haldex Repairs under their warranty, and cover the full cost of the labour to fit it, return the defective one etc etc. So the question is not whether they should be charging you more than you can buy the part yourself, as they will always tend to do so, but whether the margin they have applied is fair and reasonable given the effort they expend and the risk they carry as a business of delivering a full warranted service.

@SwissJetPilot and @Gaz83 - I've just had my pump done ( 2008 3.2 VR6 - Q - What do you call a Quattro with a... ) and this post reminded me that I'd seen odd things around the mileage figure associated with the error too, but I was seeing it on both my OBDeleven and my VCDS. The VCDS printout the last time I read the code before the pump was changed is as follows. My car has around 64K miles on it (around 102K km). The mileage figure shown equates to 2.2 million miles.

Mine said intermittent as you can see, but in fact, it wouldn't run an output test with VCDS at all. Nothing intermittent about that :)

Fault frequency didn't make sense either given my understanding that the pump runs every so often during normal driving to keep the system primed, so you might expect the figure to be far higher within the period of just one journey. That raises the possibility the figure equates to drive-cycles OR where the operation of the Haldex was instigated but failed.

@ YorkshireMidge - That would be a very interesting question to pose the Ross Tech Forum guys. Uwe Ross and his team is pretty good about replying. Just post your entire fault scan, and ask why the mileage is being reported at 3,618,101 km

@ Gaz83 - You might want to contact some of the other Forum members who have had their Haldex serviced recently and see what they think. Hopefully they can point you to a reliable mechanic in your area. Otherwise, I believe many Forum members have used www.haldexrepairs.co.uk as a good source of service or parts.

@Gaz83 - that price seems very high to me. Who’s quoted that to you?

As a comparison, I had my gen 2 haldex serviced at my local Audi main dealer (inchcape Chester) and they were very good. They agreed to change the filter and also remove the pump and replace the pre filter - I was providing the filter but they were providing the rest….oil, drain/fill plugs, pre filter service kit.

For this, they quoted me ÂŁ79.00 for the haldex service and it was agreed that I provide the main filter (about ÂŁ50 from recollection). They said they would change the filter for the cost of half an hours labour (around ÂŁ60 from recollection).

Total cost to me was ÂŁ50 for the filter, ÂŁ79 for the service charge and ÂŁ60 additional labour totalling ÂŁ189.00.

They couldn’t remove the pump as it was seized on but still working fine so I elected to leave it rather than damage a working pump and shelling out for a new one -you might find the same…..

You might wanna try your local Audi main dealer before accepting that quotation!

That's the difficulty with pricing - you could either view this as a good deal from a main dealer (which it probably is), or not as good as it could have been. You paid ÂŁ13 more for your Haldex service than my main dealer charged last December (ÂŁ65.89 inc vat). You paid ÂŁ50 for a filter - when that should have bought you an oil AND filter kit for a Gen 2 system. They already have the car on the ramps and are changing the Haldex oil, and have charged a fair bit of extra labour for undoing two more bolts and swapping the filter you provided to them, which will probably have taken an extra 4-5 minutes judging by the video I posted. Given it's their own bad practice of not changing filters that is causing problems, I'm not sure how they have the nerve to have charged for the extra few minutes either.

I think the bottom line is if you're prepared to do a bit of digging and negotiation and accept a bit of risk and work yourself, you can bring a price down - even from a main dealer to some degree. Conversely, if you just ask for a quote to get something fixed, the price you pay is going to be fully loaded/premium - and that is what the OP seems to have been quoted.

"open circuit" and "intermittent" suggests to me that it would be worth checking the wiring first. I don't see how that would happen with a clogged or faulty pump.

Although it could be the controller starting to fail. Haldex Repairs will take your controller and test it for a modest fee. If it's repairable, they will repair you and charge their usual price. If it's not repairable, they probably can sell you a new one (which is more expensive again),

@YorkshireMidge yeah, appreciate what you’re saying but for me, I just wanted to get it done sooner rather than later. I’d already bought the filter and oil with plans to do it myself but that wasn’t gonna happen due to personal circumstances so I had to get someone to do it for me. My local Audi Indy specialist wanted way over £200 to do the same thing the main dealer was gonna do, hence going with Audi.

Sure, I agree, changing the filter is likely a 10 minute job, but sometimes you’re over a barrel and have to drop your trousers. The quote the OP has had seems exorbitant to say the least…..

I wonder, did your ÂŁ65.89 audi haldex service include changing the filter? - that seems odd as the filter and oil alone costs more than that at dealer prices.

Service kits from autofaultfinder / haldexrepairs.co.uk maybe £50 including fill/drain/filter/o-rings/oil but they aren’t using genuine OEM parts or fluids. Not saying they’re not up to the job, but it’s not OEM stuff. Febi fluids etc.

I had already bought Audi OEM service items and I very much doubt they would have fitted/used non-OEM stuff and provided warranty on work which is what was important to me. You can see from the pics in the link below that the filter cover isn’t OEM and fluid in the kit is Febi.

Don't get me wrong Steve, I'm just making the point that it's a complete minefield trying to compare quotes for all the reasons we're discussing, and whilst the OP's quote might look expensive (and may prove to be so), it is possible to consider circumstances where it would be a good deal. For example, if it is a firm quote rather than estimate, and the garage is costing for removing and cleaning the pump strainer and replacing the filter - but they then find the pump is seized solid like yours, they could spend all of the two hours time they have estimated and possibly more, and they also carry the risk that they could damage the pump or the Haldex casing trying to remove it. The markup on the parts still seems very steep to me though whichever way you cut it, and that would make we want to get a second quote.

The oil I received is indeed Febi - but it seems unlikely Borg Warner would be creating their own oils, so even if a bottle arrived with their name on it, they are unlikely to have made it. I doubt Febi made theirs either. With such a specialist oil, the number of true manufacturers is likely to be very low. In any case, the main point with oils is making sure they comply with the spec and come from a reputable brand.

As for main dealers, they have been merrily charging for Haldex "services", which consist only of changing the oil, and that was certainly the case on my previous two services. i.e. NOT removing the pump and cleaning the strainer, and NOT replacing a filter which the OEM could supply to them. Now it could be argued that the pump is working hard, a 50K+ miles lifespan is OK considering how much it is operating, and the fact it is completely exposed underneath the car, so doing a proper service isn't justified. I can just about get my head around that argument financially if that is what Audi/VW are trying to claim AND if the main dealers charged a reasonable sum to swap the pump (which they don't) - but I have a hell of a problem with the safety aspects of it. The first time you know about a problem is when you don't have the levels of grip you normally have.

Anyway, we're talking about filters when this may well prove to be yet another pump problem.

@Gaz83 Obviously, it's not possible to know for certain, but I'd edge towards that being the case given the age of your vehicle and the fact its a common issue and some of us have had it.

Was playing with my OBDEleven this morning and decided to do some live data monitoring.
2 things I checked was "camshaft adjustment adaption", as I read you can get an idea about chain stretch (think mine is starting to) and "All Wheel Control" - Channel 004. Filter aside, I wanted to know if the pump was dead as I don't want to get the haldex filter changed for it to come out and pump to be dead.

For the entire journey, approx. 26 miles, the readings where this

Pump (v181) enabled = LO
Pump (v181) running = LO
Pump (v181) actuation = 0.0%
Pump (v181) current = 0.000 A

Is that an indication that it's faulty? considering its not running at all. Voltage is around 14V
