breaking in new clutch - some questons

Hi guys, getting a new clutch fitted (and maybe flywheel) on Thursday.

What are the rules for breaking it in? I read you should drive quite conservatively for the first 500 miles, is that right.

Where i'm getting the work done, its about 100 miles away, most of it motorway miles, is that bad for the break in procedure?

Also a question, i tend to pootle along in 5th on slow moving roads, is this bad for the clutch - my dad told me it was a way to not waste petrol, is this bad. Should you be in a lower gear, revving higher, i hate the car revving unnecessarily in a lower gear.

Thanks!

Once your foot is off the clutch its not slipping so doesnt really matter what load you are putting on the engine from a clutch point of view.

As Hoggy says, dumping the clutch for a launch off the line, slipping the clutch to hold the car on a hill or trying to move off in second etc... will all be bad for a new clutch. Also make sure you foot isnt resting on it while driving along and try and keep the revs as low as possible when slipping the clutch to creep when parking etc... to put as little heat through it as possible. The better you treat it for the first 500-1000 miles the nicer it will feel and the longer it will last.

As for pootling in 5th, on a flat road, i am often in 6th at 30mph which the car is perfectly fine with :) You just need to shift down if accelerating or start to go up a hill or it starts to struggle

If you're changing the flywheel then that face will be fresh. Like new brake pads and discs you need to get some controlled material transfer on to it to make it work properly, that only really takes place when you de-clutch and change gear, so if you have the option of taking the pretty route home, do so. The motorway miles won't hurt it, but it's not doing much to help either. As the other guys have said avoid all the fierce stuff, labouring, riding the pedal and so on.

What VT said really, better off taking the rural route so you'll be doing some frequent engaging / biting / transitioning blah blah. The motorway is just one big engagement which won't do much breaking in.

Firediamond - 30mph in 6th! Foot to the floor for 5 seconds if you wanna' get up to 40 !
