Hi all,

I bought my Audi TT about 1 month ago and love it.. However, i thought the cambelt needed changing after 60k then 120k and so on. My car has 80k on the clock with the cambelt done at 60k however this is how the cars service history is from 3 years old as cant remeber the figures before it! Its 1999 so 10 years old just!

@ 3 years old 45k
4 years - 50k
5 years - 55k
6 years - 60k - - - CAMBELT CHANGE
7 years - 65k
8 years - 70k
9 years - 75k
10 years - 80k

What do people reckon as i bought the car thinking i wouldn't need one done for time as i got quoted ÂŁ600 excluding VAT which is just for the cambelt done... service is extra! Thats from VW/Audi in Bolton.....

I am happy with the power as i drove a 225 and 180 but i couldn't let this one go as it was a friend who had it for 7 years and she kept it immaculate... if the garage gave her a breakdown of what needed doing, the week after their is a reciept saying its been done! The insurance was about ÂŁ70 difference but im happy i got a good car up to now fingers crossed!
It has the xenons, 18" rs4s, bose system, black half leather interior, its a lovely blue and i have just added a twin exhaust and valance to make it look better but thats it! At 21 too the insurance is very good at ÂŁ900 fully comp.... some people will think its dear... considering my firt car cost me ÂŁ500 and i paid ÂŁ1200 third party for a 1.2 corsa i think its reasonable!

Thanks for any advice!

Jen :)

Get a quote from a reputable, independent garage for a CAM KIT change. Note I said KIT and not just belt.

Try searching the forum regarding this as there are hours of threads on it.

Hi Jen,

Basically, the cambelt must be changed every 5 years or 60k miles as a matter of precaution. Make sure they use a whole new cambelt kit, not just the belt itself. To cut a long story short, it is advisable to have the water pump changed at the same time whilsts the belts off.

My car was done by a reputable VAG specialist for around ÂŁ300 and you shouldn't need to pay a lot more than that.

From what I make of what you've written, yours was done in 2005/60k miles ??, meaning it will be due another in 2010 (5 years later).

Hope that helps a bit.

Tim

Hi Tim,

I'm in East Sussex....whose the specailist you refer to? I'll be swapping mine out next year by the looks of it and will be looking for someone reputable.

On another note, did anyone ever get an answer as to why the manual states a cambelt change at over 100,000?. I can't understand why there shpuld be such a disparity between stated manufacturer information and reality. 60,000 miles or so is one hell of a difference in my books

Cheers

Audi origionaly stated 100,000K for replacement but as they were getting lots of complaints of them snapping. Also nodoubt with Audi having to fork out some if not all for the dsamage done. They then played round with the recommendation for camblet replacement intervals. Now they eventually settled on the lot lower figure of 60k after I believe other milage recommendations had gone before. This did at least 2 things.
1/ Gave Audi dealers more custom and therefore more money to change belts.
2/ Resulted in less claims against them for cambelt failures.
Dunno why they never reduced the milage to say 30k

Hi, yes I have asked for the water pump to be done aswell, about an extra ÂŁ40 if done at the same time. I will ask about the other items you have listed though, thanks for pointing them out.

Evening All

Can understand moving to an independent rather than using an Audi Centre, but it could be worth bearing in mind the 'dashpod problem'?
With Audi's new stance of only replacing dashpods FOC on a goodwill basis if the car has an Audi service history and it hasn't been replaced before, it might be worth swallowing a little extra cost for a cambelt, water pump etc. to save ÂŁ800 - ÂŁ900 for a new dashpod?
It worked for us, cambelt etc cost ÂŁ429 just under 2 years ago when car was 5 years old and the dashpod was done FOC last month.
Just a thought.................

All sounds like good advice....mine only has about 54,000 on it however, all this chatter about engines exploding is starting to make me a bit paranoid..Am I taking a HUGE risk driving it out to 60,000 ? The car isn't even 5 years old yet

Can anyone reccoomend a good indy in East Sussex?.....the Audi dealer price sounds good though...is that price inclusive of labour?

cheers

Hi again,
If its any consolation, i asked Audi to leave my cambelt in the car so that i could have a look at it, expecting it to be chewed or something grotty, and it looks like new :( :( so being concerned that my cambelt knew when it was 5yrs old and would pop any miniute can also be dissappointing if you know what i mean.
But feel better now its done :)

Hi All

The Audi dealer where I have my Audi TT serviced (full service history) sent me a letter informing me that the car is reaching 5 years old, time to renew the car cambelt. Two weeks later they sent me a post card saying the same thing with the price of ÂŁ329.00 - nice to get a reminder off them! I know that doesn't include the water pump but I wondered about the engine stretch bolts!! So I rang the parts department ,you would think this would be a stock item, however they apparesntly don't keep these in stock!! I asked when the mechanics change t he cambelt, also don't they renew the stretch bolts - No! came the reply, who can you trust!! :?

PS
Just worried about the dashpod problem - full service history.
