Do I really need a torque wrench for installing spark plugs?

Ive never bought a torque wrench (you know the ones where you can set the exact torque you wish to tighten a nut to) becuase Ive never found one for less than 350 euros.

So my question is when re-installing spark plugs do i really need a torque wrench? If so where can I get a good one which isnt that expensive and if not how hard do I tighten it - or does it not really matter as long as i dont leave it loose or over tighten it to the point of threads stripping?

as its an aluminium block, you will have less chance of stripping threads with a torque wrench. 30nm when cold.

in the UK Halfords do a good one for £50

350 euros

Are they gold plated for the richer residents down there :?:

I bought one here in Luxembourg for 75 euros (50GBP).

350 euros is just crazy money ..... you can get a simple one in the UK for less than £40. I seriously recommend you use one, it's really easy to overtighten a plug in an alloy block!!

Obviously best to use a torque wrench......BUT I've never known anyone I know to use one. I certainly never have for changing plugs. Just be carefull and aware of the dangers. If you meet resistance don't just keep tightening. Generally finger tight and about 1/4 of a turn is usually about right.

Well, there are some pretty inexpensive ones there, but if all you want is something to ensure you don't overtighten spark plugs they should be fine. The Teng one on eBay Espana was the best of the bunch, but you should bear in mind that most of these are 3/8" drive and if all your tools are 1/2" drive you might have a little problem ......

Well yes, there is that .... if it was me though, I wouldn't buy a major tool (like a torque wrench) that wasn't 1/2" drive because nearly all of my sockets etc are that dimension. Easier to convert down rather than up IMHO ......

Also, bear in mind the range of torques that you want to cover too. Many of them don't do the smaller torques settings or if they do then they don't cover the larger torques requirments. Ideally you'll have one for the small torque ranges and a larger one for the big torques.

I like the price of the screwfix one, lets see if they deliver to spain....

Well im buying it to fit spark plugs so Ill only need one.

What torque setting do spark plugs need to be installed at is it universal for all cars or does it vary?
