Excessive rear tyre wear...

So, 2002 S Line 225 Quattro.

While investigating a wheel bearing noise, I discovered my two rear tyres were worn. As in really really worn right down to wires and flat spots.... Guess that's where the noise was coming from as all wheels feel fine. It really caught me by surprise as I can't easily see the tread at the rear (constant shitty weather when I actually have time and bad back stops me getting down there recently) and all 4 tyres haven't been on there long. I fitted 4 Eagle F1 AS5s and had 4wheel alignment done maybe 15k ago. Front's are still good, maybe half worn? I mainly do motorway cruising and not much flying around bends nowadays (seen enough of the end results and it's not pretty...) so it's not driving style.

From what I've read online it's either:
a) toe adjustment out
b) Haldex service required
but there's no definitive answer. I had a Haldex service recently (5k ago...?) but they said they'd filled it through the 'wrong' hole as opposed to the one you're supposed to to avoid the mess of pulling it out (forgot the details, sorry) which I wasn't happy about so drove slowly to begin with hoping to let it circulate. No idea how the unit works so don't know if it'd damage it or not?

People report that adjusting the toe cures it and the wear indicates it might be this, but the Haldex concerns me and I'm wondering how it has flat spots- is it the Haldex locking up or whatever? The rears seem to have a lot more camber inwards at the top than the fronts and tyre wear is definitley a slight more on the inner and definitely more on the left than the right wheel. The rear shimmys a bit on the odd bump while cornering too. I initially suspected knackered shocks before seeing this and will be fitting new Monroe shocks with Eibach 25mm drop springs (closest to standard for S Line for the money) and polybush top mounts, as soon as it all arrives, along with another 4 wheel alignment.

Any thoughts on this, especially with relation to the flat spots that I can see and feel on the tyres. Could it be just where it's worn down to an inner compound? Haldex damage?

Your supposed to check your tyres before every journey and check pressures on a regular basis.
How did you not notice that ?
That's shocking wear for 15k. I was going to ask if they were cheap Chinese tyres but shocked you said they were a good make.
Could they be counterfeit or very old ?

The only tyre with an issue is the left rear.
That has very heavy wear all across the tread, only slightly more on the inner edge.
The wear with excessive camber/toe gives ridiculous inner edge wear, as in worn to a chamfer on the inner edge. You haven't got that.

The right rear is just worn to its compound change point.

Were there any advisories on its last MOT?

Needs everything checking on the rear, especially the rear left.

They are too much toe in, you can see how the rubbers scrubbed to a sharp point on one edge of the grooves.
They should be a very slight toe in.
Also too much neg camber can cause the shimmy on bumps.
Check the camber arm bushes and the trailing arm bushes first, if they are ok then adjustable camber arms and wheel alignment should sort it

Thanks everyone! As I explained due to back issues and shitty weather I have not got down on my knees to look at tyres and when checking pressures they looked fine form the side profiles. Also due to the mileage and the state of the fronts I had no reason to suspect this. It was really shocking to see! New tyres goingon today and I'll get an alignment once rest of suspension on. I'll check bushes etc too. Thanks guys. No thoughts on Haldex issues causing this?

How low is your car? Measure from centre of the wheel to the arch vertically above it and do both rears, 370 is standard 350 is facelift or sporty. They should obviously be the same, if the tyre is leaning in then inside tyre wear will result which is a side effect of being low and adjustable tie arms will help. If your trailing arm bushes have play in them then the tyre will move and wear will be uneven over the tyre surface. Also worth checking yer rear springs have not snapped at the end of the spring, difficult to see as the springs are small to start with but certainly worth checking. And don’t use that garage again as it sounds like they are way out of their depth when it comes to TT’s.

Good to hear it's probably not the Haldex. Had the tyres fitted today and got it on the alignment machine for a readout. Oh boy... Had a quick look and everything (springs etc) looks fine at first glance. I was on the way to work so wasn't going to get too dirty investigating. So here's the readout and toe and camber issues fully explain the tyre wear. Now I need to locate the source of the camber issues. I'll get adjustable lower arms anyway but I'll check the bushes at the weekend.

One thing though- the machine is a Corghi and it lists the options for this model quattro as Sport (2000-2006) or Standard (99-2006) and Standard (2003-2006). I assume as mine is a 2002 S Line with the 20mm lowering it is a Sport suspension...?

Thanks, no not this time as I just wanted the tyres changed so that I can drive it safely to the garage etc. I'm changing all the shocks, springs, top mounts, lower rear arms so no point yet. I just wanted to see what it was like now untouched so that I knew if it was out or not.

Ok, so got the alignment done today after fitting new Monroe shocks, Eibach Pro -25mm (so -5mm on what I had) and cheapy adjustable tie bars. The garage reckoned he couldn't get the Proflex poly bush top mount thingies on properly so I'll try the local VAG specialist or diy if I ever get the time. Anyway, results as above. Drives good, but only been around town so far, tomorrow is the long commute day so we'll see.

However, while underneath, I spotted that the Haldex has a slight leak. Any ideas where to start looking? Had the filter and oil changed recently so could be that? And a spot of rust on both sides's leading edges of the sills. That'll need seeing to soon!

Whereabouts on the Haldex is the evidence of the leak? Near the filter, or near the filler / drain plug, or I think there's a breather hole somewhere towards the top end?

The way I put the new oil in mine was by inserting it upwards through the drain plug using a cartridge gun and then dropping the drain plug on the floor out of reach, shouting for someone to pick it up and pass it to me while holding my finger over the hole, then putting the drain plug back in the hole. Plenty of scope for getting oil around the place, but a bit off if it wasn't cleaned up before returning it to you.
