Exhaust gas temp sensor

Hi all,

So got a cable and vcds lite the other day. Cleared all codes and took the car (tt 225 53plate) and one came back which was "17861 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Open or Short to Plus. P1453 - 35-00 - -"

This seems to me atleast to tie in with not that great average mpg and random misfires/ occasional low boost in multi geared runs.

So I tried to find this little unit. I took all the front tray bits off at the front of the engine and could see the edge of this unit poking out. Do I need to take the intake manifold off to get it out? And what about the sensor Side of it? I hear it near the turbo.

Any help appreciated and advice on how I should progress / what I need to do/ replace etc

Check it's not been disconnected first, then clean up the connections as that's usually the problem.

Mine was running badly and extremely hesitant under load with a big loss in mpg. Vag com pointed to the egt sensor as it had come loose. Reconnected it and car back to normal now.

Thanks guys. So to check its connections do you mean the ones to the battery? The unit was all plugged in fine but I didn't trace the rats neat of wires back to I'm guessing the battery?

I may be interested in buying one but ideally I wanted to just check mine was nothing simple first!

the EGT unit is located under the inlet manifold along with the connector and plug. As has been said worth checking mine I found mine disconnected with the same issues you mentioned..

Some useful picks on this from 'Horseoutside' on the post page at the moment 'Failing Exhaust Gas Sensor.

The sensor is not located under the inlet. However the connectors are.

Just checked it all out. The unit is under the inlet for sure as I just got it out of there. I think you are possibly confusing it with the lambda sensor as looking at the pic from earlier I think on second thoughts that may also be a lambda sensor not the egt?

Upon checking it the front connection looks good and the silver wire feels a little softer as its bent round a little but seems ok and I don't think it's possible to "fix" the connection there anyway. Is it most likely I need a new sensor?

Ps I felt the big 17mm sensor also so thanks for the help on that. Don't think it's going to be too hard a job.....

Yes the pic earlier in the thread is a lambda sensor. Egt sensor has a right angle bend just after the securin bolt and is on a braided silver wire.
Ok that's great, I could feel the bend etc so I have located it. Is it a bugger to undo as its been subjected to so much heat? I remember my lambda sensor on my old car was a nightmare to undo!
