is there a compound i can use to try and get nasty little marks and small chips out of my headlight lenses/covers? Has anyone done it succesfully?

The headlight lenses can be rubbed back to a better finish , there was an article in AbsoluTTe magazine where someone used various grades of wet and dry and polishing compounds to get the lenses as good as new
