I just didn't like the look of this thing, aka "the-nearly-$400 mistake"!

So yeah just a tale of caution here--make sure you will actually like the things you are buying, esp. when it's not something you can just return or whatever.

I bought an aftermarket "RS style" grille of the "blackout" variety for my car back in summer of 2022. I received it long ago but never bothered/got around to, putting it on. Just sat in a box for over a year I guess. I was honestly always pretty affected by "buyer's remorse" on this one, wondering how the black grille would look on a black car.

I decided to buy it in the first place for two reasons:
1. The original grille on my S was a bit worn from all the miles the car had and the plasti-chrome surround in particular is starting to peel a bit (more on this later). I was really thinking to buy an OE-look/style S grille but the problem was I didn't know if the horizontal slats would be matte/satin like they are on the S or whether they'd be chromed and the pics of such aftermarket replacements on eBay were not good enough to determine it. Trying to communicate with China-based sellers on it didn't really give any clear answer either.

2. I then decided to go for the black "RS style" one since this particular one was the newer style which has the nice "cutout" in the bottom where you can additionally install a "quattro" logo. I.e. It makes it look like more modern Audis with that same logo in that same sort of place in the lower part of the grille. "On paper" it seemed to be a good idea. Well I can definitely say now this was NOT a good idea and that buyer's remorse was well placed.

Pulling a pic from a similar eBay auction, this is the style that I bought:

It was almost $300 USD and therefore almost $400 CAD, which seemed a lot cheaper at the time I bought it than now...when I don't like it at all 😅

FFWD to recently where I decided to pull the bumper and then have a go at removing the grille and seeing what the "blackout RS style" one looked like. Well...I didn't like it LOL.

Getting out the original grille (after the bumper was removed) was a real PITA too, to do so the proper way without going at it like some hacks I've seen on YT do it (complete with breaking up the original grille and all kind of madness!). But anyway I got it separated from the bumper...the right way, from behind and w/o damaging anything, and here's what the result looks like.

Here's my bumper off and the original grille on it (yeah yeah don't mind the packed up Christmas decorations in the background lol):

And here's what it looks like with the aftermarket grille (just placed there not installed since to actually clip it in you need to cut the bumper, I didn't install the rings or quattro logo, either):

Ugh. 🤮 Just. Not. For me.

First of all there's no contrast (I'm not a fan of "blacked out" stuff in general); secondly it then makes the two fog grilles with the trademark matte silver "S" accents the only things like that (with the contrast); thirdly I had my lip painted blue (along with my wheels and mirrors wrapped) to put more colour on the car, the black only kills that effect. To me, the grille simply looks out of place and I'm just not "sold" on it unfortunately.

As most are aware, the bumper has to be modified for this to fit (you have to cut the centre support which you can see behind the grille); plus you would have to cutaway (at least partially) the energy absorber that sits behind the bumper. (I've seen some people, again on YT, totally remove that energy aborber which is a galactically bad idea but whatever). These are not things I'd be totally averse to modifying...had I actually liked how this looked. But I don't. So, it's simply not going on.

Another note is we have front LPs here in ON, Canada so I had to get a cheap LP holder separately (it comes with the Euro long-style one as shown in the stock photo). I mean that was only like $10 or whatever but still something I didn't need to bother with.

Anyway I've made some mistakes here and there on cars over the years but usually the more boneheaded ones while working on them mechanically 🤣 This is probably the first cosmetic mod I bought and really disliked later/when actually on the car. Also it def. has to be the most expensive one. Oh well, first time for everything I guess. 😐

To be clear there's nothing wrong with it and I think it'd look fine on another car (particularly a car any colour other than black), but it just doesn't suit my car or my taste. Over time I've realised I really like the way Audi did the stock S grilles on cars of this gen, and I don't want to change mine. I think the only thing to do with the aftermarket one now is to put it up for sale on kijiji/fb marketplace, etc. Thing that sucks is the TT is such a rare car over here to begin with, I think it'll just end up sitting in my basement in the box a loonnng time 😐 That $400 obviously long sailed 😥

My plan now is to do what I can in reconditioning this surround:

Which will actually be a lot easier said than done since any "chrome" spray paints are basically just glorified silver and you will never get the same chromed effect as a manufactured part unfortunately.

From there I think I'm going to clear plastidip over the surround to try to make the entire thing have a more matte look--one because that's a better match for the rest of the factory S parts anyway (including the rest of the grille), two because that's about as good as I'll get scraping off the messed up chrome and spray painting the bottom part.

Additionally I'm going to repaint the plate insert part, which I believe is either Audi Platinum Grey or Audi Stone Grey (if anyone knows for sure, lmk), by just getting a can of it made up at a paint supplier and doing a spray paint on it. Might not be visible in the pics but it's very stone chipped/pitted too. Wish me luck.

Oh and if anyone around the GTA here in Canada see this and wants the black RS grille, it's for sale lol.

Your original chrome grill looks miles better and has more character.

I fully agree, too much black on black completely loses the engineered styling and lines of a car.

Just having a look around on this link below and I think your evst option might be to sit wait and look to buy the grill from a breaker.

Perhaps if you paid someone $100 to swap the grill on a full bumper with your grill?

That way they can resell the entire peace for probably the same price and get $100 for nothing?

Failing that, you could try filling in the surround, sanding, painting in a primer then try a chrome paint and lacquer.

You probably won't get a higher chrome shine, but it will look more complete.

Another vote for the original here too. As for the chrome trim, could you chrome wrap it instead of painting? - chrome paints rarely are actually like chrome ….. at all.

Yea, it's the lacquer. As soon as you lacquer the chrome paint it turns a dull silver. I thought I cracked chrome paint on some wing mirror covers a while back until I applied a 2k clear coat...

Revenge, you could hydrodip once the surface has been smooth and levelled out to get a nice professional finish... But, I don't think hydrodip in a chrome finish is possible.

Outside of chrome plating (absolute bomb of money) wrapping would appear to be the best solution as stevie said... Thinking about it, if you had a strip of chrome wrap and a proper heat gun, it could be do-able.

FWIW, I have the same exact grille, and no modifications are needed for it on a TTRS. My car came with the BO package so the grille looks right at home

Yeah I def. agree looks much better on a blue car. In fact my A3 (Sprint Blue) also has the blackout pkg on it and it has a black grille from factory and it looks great to me. Now I don't plan on adding any aftermarket/RS style/honeycomb grille to that car but the factory standard black looks fine and good.

I just can't stand the look of the black grille on a black car unfortunately--just can't do it lol. I get some people love that kind of "murdered out" kind of thing but it's just not for me.

Well I'm not really a fan of chrome either, lol, but yeah the matte silver (which is most of it except the surround) is quite nice and as said it adds the necessary contrast on the black car. So my plan is basically to make the surround now matte look as well--but not sure how good a job I can do. We'll see I suppose.

Yeah as you say one cannot simply duplicate or "paint on" the kind of chrome you get on plastic parts unforutnately. They basically need to be manufactured like that and you need to replace the part once this kind of thing happens. But problem is they don't sell this separately, it only comes with the complete grille which is ludicrous money for OE and I already spent money stupidly here unfortunately so just gonna go for broke on the DIY route!

Wrap is another idea, yeah, I thought about that too. I'll see what I can do with the paint and stuff though and how good of a job I can do getting both the part I have to repair and the existing chrome, to look more like the matte parts in the rest of the grille (and fog grilles). Due to roller coaster temps here these days, will likely be another month that bumper is sitting inside my house!

I think the chrome grill looks a lot better and gives better contrast especially on black.

I'm currently stuck in a dilemma of choosing a new grill. I'm really not a fan of the prefaclift grill I have (s line sp edition, UK spec). But can't decide between the TTS chrome grill or the black facelift grill (I ruled out the rs grill) I can't decide if the Aruba blue is too dark to suit being blacked out or not.

But it is also a convertible so I already have a black roof. I can't decide. If it was all back I would go chrome though. I don't want to make the same expensive mistake.

Yeah it's tough esp. when you [might be] buying knock-off stuff from like China where you're not going to have any "return policy" to speak of, if you don't like it or whatever.

However I'd say your car would probably look good with the black as does Matt's car (the above photos), but as always it's a personal preference thing. All you can really do is look at pics unless there's some local shop that has this stuff and can kind of show it to you on your actual car before you 100% decide on it. Perhaps that a possibility (shops stocking stuff like that) in UK where the TT is at its height of popularity. That kind of thing was never gonna happen here, lol, so I just went for broke and it didn't end up so good.

I have a similar grill. Mine came with both the chrome and BO logo, but I went with the chrome for the contrast.

The outer rim is chrome while the quattro logo is also chrome. I'll be swapping out the grills this weekend and take some pictures for comparison purposes.

Your outer ring looks black, just like mine though? Looks like you have the exact same one actually.

I mean the whole thing is of course an entirely "personal preference" thing. If someone likes it on their car then by all means. Also I think your car is Oolong Grey and not Phantom or Brilliant Black?

Mine did come with the chrome rings of which I didn't install when I "mocked it up" since I didn't want to break the plastic protector thing off the grille as this way I can sell it as 100% new still.

I did consider this:
-Paint/plasti dip the rings blue (I did this on my other car, like how it looks but that car is blue)
-Get the blue version of the lower "quattro" logo

These two would at least continue the blue highlights on the car, in the grille. However then the problem would become the two fog grilles are the S matte silver and that would leave them as the only thing on the car (save for the fuel door) that's would be that colour.

The whole thing just seems like too much trouble for me at this point--it's like doing a whole bunch of this or that just to get it more to my liking and then in the end probably still not liking it much. This is probably the first time this has come about in terms of cosmetic mods for me. As said it was a somewhat expensive mistake but I guess I'll just live with it. I'll see if I can sell it on kijiji or marketplace but otherwise just gonna call it a day on this one.

I did end up scraping off the chrome on the lower part of the [original] grille surround and starting to paint that. I found a good colour match for the S matte colour actually but with some caveats which I'll get into a bit later (with some pictures). I have to re-sand and paint what I did so far for a few reasons (again which I'll get into) but have a good plan on getting the surround to an "S matte" colour now. Will update soon.

Well I made a little progress on this but to avoid confusion with the "mistake" of the dumb blackout grille and the stock grille reconditioning, I'm gonna make another thread on it in a minute. It's def. an "in progress" job and highly dependent on weather (rain has been killer recently) so will be the weekend before I get to continue but I think I have a plan now...TBA on the next thread.
