For the first time the TT didn't fly through it's road test, I have to replace the left inner tie rod.

Is this a handy DIY or a PITA?

Cheers.

I'm about to do mine, whilst I've not done one on a TT I've changed them on a Focus & they're all pretty much the same on any car, get yourself a large set of water pump pliers & they just screw off & on.

People will say count the turns on the outer track rod end when taking it off & do the same number of turns when putting it back on but I'd say do that & still get your tracking looked at

If you're doing your ties shortly, would you mind putting up a few pics of the process? I can be very limited on time and can't do without the car if a balls up ensues! I'm fairly handy until a bolt shears, something won't release etc etc, and I don't have the equipment to get around it. If it looks a potential faff, I may just get the local garage to do it. Cheers.

It's pretty easy do to, you don't need to undo the ball joint though. Just pop out the outer tie rod from the knuckle and you can then remove the inner one. It's pretty tight though with the subframe. Even if you count the threads you'll prob still need an alignment. It's honestly not worth the hassle to DYI.
