Interior light intermittent fault

Hi Guys

Got a bit of a weird issue with my interior/door activated lights on my mk2. Occasionally it won't work when either door opens. Ive tried to rectify on numerous occasions by pressing the centre button whilst either door is open, it flashes, then straight off again.
This evening I unlocked the car on the key fob and light came on as you'd expect, then opened the passenger door to throw my gym bag in and the light immediately went off, with me unable to revive it there and then, again just doing the 'flashing on' thing. Then I arrived home after a 10 minute drive, and could get it to work normally again?! I've been trying to find some consistency in the error but it seems quite random at the moment. It may just need more time to try and diagnose when and exactly what the traits are but thought I'd ask the question in case someone else has had similar issues and can point me in the right direction before I start replacing things.
Door windows both drop as you'd expect and the chime works when you open the drivers door warning of headlights being on.
The map light function also works perfectly when the door opening light function is playing up.

Thanks in advance!

Chris, you don't say age and mileage of your car.
If either are high then I'd say driver's door flexible rubber tube between A pillar and door (near hinge) is likely culprit as wires work-harden over time, become brittle and can break (as Hoggy suggests).
With light expected to be on try swinging door and/or squeezing rubber tube when door open. If light flickers you will have your answer.

Its an '07 plate coupe with 76k. So not particularly high miles but I suppose its not that young anymore.
I'll give wires a check as you mention tomorrow, thanks for that.
Oh and Hoggy they're standard bulbs as far as I'm aware, not LED. The more yellow light colour would suggest so anyway.

Hi, I have a interior light glitch too, but not quite as bad but still annoying. I have a 2010 Mk2 TTRS just approaching 70k. My interior light works fine for a while, then doesn't come on when I open the door. It will come on if I push the button and then it will continue to work normally for a while then - deactivate itself again. Any body have any ideas why it keeps doing this? I've only have this car since June last year when I upgraded from my Mk1 and this model seems to have more issues...

Anyone resolve this? My car seems to be doing the same after months of working as expected. The yellow light in the middle keeps extingushing and I've got to the point where i have to turn the interior light on manually each time, although it has no problem turning off. I've scanned the whole car for faults, none reported. DIS reporting drivers or passenger door open fine too... Hmmmm?

Do the lights come on after removing the key from the ignition?

It would help rule out the light unit or door wiring

I'd be very surprised if the passenger door wiring was the issue, especially at the same time as the driver door

Bear in mind that the light isn't actually wired to the doors, it's all through the central electric module

So I did some further investigation and diagnosis. With the ignition key in the on position, I could press the central button to turn on and off the auto interior light function as many times as I liked and that would appear to function as normal. As soon as a door was opened or the ignition key pulled out, rather than the interior light turning on, the central amber indicator would just turn off to indicate the auto on/off function was no longer active and no lights would turn on. With the amber indicator on, I then tried turning the turned the left and right interior lights on and off, one side at a time. I noticed that I could turn the driver's side light on and off as many times as I liked and the amber indicator would remain lit, however, as soon as I turned the passenger side light on the orange indicator would turn out immediately. So I pulled the interior light out using the below illustration and did some further diagnosis.

With the passenger light bulb removed the interior light now functions completely as it should, even the auto on and off works and remains doing so long term. I thought it might be the bulb, but after switching them the behaviour is still the same. For now, with the passenger side map light bulb removed, the interior light auto function is back to normal, but it looks like the electronics in the unit have failed on the passenger side.

I can see that Audi have superceeded this light four times and the current part number is 8J0947140M which is ÂŁ107 with the halogen bulbs, or 8J0947140L which is ÂŁ110 for the one with LED's. Does anyone know if these are interchangeable, maybe I'll source an LED one...?

People think the part number is 8J0951177 but that is the part number sticker for the interior motion sensor unit that mounts on top of the interior light basic/base plate.

Here's a photo of the base/basic plate with the interior monitoring sensor removed. This is what costs ÂŁ107, with no bulbs and no interior trim plate. Sadly it looks like the circuit board is plastic welded on, so I'm not sure I can be arsed to remove it to look for a broken solder joint. :? Might be onto flea bay for a fix.
