MK1 interior better than MK3?

Hi all

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed my mate commented that he preferred the interior on my MK1 to the MK3! Said the MK1 was unique (we all know it was bespoke at the time) whereas the MK3, especially in a lower trim level, just felt like any other Audi - nice, but nothing special.

What do we all think?

Think your mate hit the nail on the head with his comment,
owned mine for 13yrs and still, every time I get in to it I feel its something special.
Don't think any manufacture will make an affordable(ish) car so unique like the TT ever again.

I actually dont like the dash in the mk1 tt, i had an even older bmw before this car and as soon as i sat in the tt i thought it was bad, plastic and squeaky, not very well put together , just looked cheap and budget, still does to a certain extent, but i got the car to drive and have fun with, not care about its shortcomings. :?

Its fun to drive, but dont look too closely at it, lol close ups can get rough

Body wise mk1 all day, they lost the plot with the mk2, but you can see in the mk3 they are trying to go back to the mk1, as for inside i cant comment as i have not seen inside a mk3 yet, but inside the mk1 is a very nice place to be, who ever gets in my passenger seat always comment on how nice the interior looks, even some tt haters that hate the tt but have never been in one, but they did watch top gear once :)

I know this is the mk1 part of the forum so everyone will say the mk1 is best but I personally prefer the mk1, I've driven the mk3 tts and yes it was nice but to put it into perspective the mk1 was launched in 1998 and I think the car is still cutting edge now it simply has not aged and people who don't know much about cars still think the mk1 is a new car 8)

Just to buck the trend then...

I really like the mk3 interior - the dial/nav binnacle is a marvel, and I was far more impressed with the AC controls than I should've been. It isn't quite as overtly styled as the mk1 though, and it lacks a proper handbrake.

The only bit of the mk1 I find particularly odd is the dial binnacle, which for some reason always reminds me of a '50s Corvette.

I couldn't disagree more, the interior is what first made me want a TT and as time passes the exterior only becomes more iconic, it was and still is a unique style within the Audi marque. In contrast the Mk2 just assumed the corporate Audi identity with a nod towards the Mk1s styling, the mk3 is the same except the coprorate ID is a bit newer and fresher, within a couple of years A4s et al will look the same

Bauhaus FTW :p

Defenatly looks like a trend with the VAG group just switched from a mk4 25 anniversary Golf to a mk6 Golf R and the plastics in the R are much lower quality than the anniversary

The main thing people comment on on my TT is the interior, they all say it's beautiful/amazing/etc. But I do have the baseball seats.. :).

I recently drove a Mini as a courtesy car. I thought BMW, would be a decent interior..was creaky plastic! Felt cheap. And it was a Cooper S.

The mk1 is nice, but a tad plasticy in places.

Hi all.
I have a Mk 2 remapped TTS and my girlfriend has a MK1 225.
Although the Mk 2 is bigger, faster i still in a lot of ways prefer driving the Mk1. feels more positive and go kart ish if that makes sense. just spent ÂŁ3500 on it so must like it.lol

Glad this thread has got so many positive comments! I remember reading an article from Tif Needell of all people when he test drove a MK1 and he said something about it feeling like a 60's Porsche racer and how cool it was.

Another review (or was it the same one!) said how the interior could be in a car costing twice the price and not be out of place. Certainly when you compare it to a 911 of the time, it was so far ahead in design terms, both ergonomically and aesthetically.

I think every switch in the MK1 was unique to the TT at the time - unfortunately they diluted it somewhat by putting the same/similar switches in the A3 thereafter (and no doubt the rest of the range) but even now, with the dimpled effect carrying over on the needles, switches, vents etc., real alloy fittings, the stereo flap and those knee braces - it's an amazing piece of automotive design which has not been replicated to the same degree in either of the newer TT's. And exterior-wise, side on its still the sexiest shape of all three - a definite classic in the making.

Stephen Bayley wrote a gorgeous book about Car design, but how the TT didn't make it in to it still baffles me - especially when he has since written a page in Octane magazine about the design of the MK1 TT!

Yes, we're biased I know! :p

Yes, one of the few cars that you can tell was designed as a complete concept rather than just made up from the parts bin of the period. Probably why it has dated so well.

Currently looking to get back into TT ownership after a few years out and looking back over the pics from my previous Mk1 TT interior, I'd forgotten just what a nice place it was to be...

My mate recently bought a BMW 1 series convertible 12,plate sport (sport is bottom of the range perversely) and inside its shockingly sparse, feels cheap and with a cloth interior, rubbish drive too!

Mk1 TT interior is more spacious compared to the Mk3. I tried it out yesterday with this in mind. I think this is mainly due to the increased safety features. Prefer the Mk1. I was decidedly unimpressed with the mk3 unfortunately. :(

I used to have a BMW 3 series, E46 model. The interior in that was amazing compared to what you get in cars these days! In fact I'd have to say my ÂŁ600 battered Renault Clio, N reg I think, had a more solid interior than most modern cars.

I thought ALL modern `Minis` were Cooper S`s !!!!
They all seem to be Cooper derivative don't they? The one I borrowed was pretty fast and fun, but everything felt pretty cheap.
