New Boot Struts for 3.2 - All too long!?

hi,

Trying to do a simple job - bought a cheap pair off Ebay thinking it'll be OK. They're suposed to fit the 3.2 but they are WAY too long (by a good 2cm).

So I tried to get Stabilus ones (read these were OEM) and even confirmed with the car parts supplier that these were compatible with the 3.2. The Stabilus ones they replied they can no longer get, but they have Quintin Hazell ones thast are confirmed to be compatible with the 3.2. These arrived, but again, they are too long by about 1/2 a CM!

Am I doing something stupid? Shouldn't the old struts just pull off and new ones push back on - you shouldn't have to compress the new struts or anything?

Just curious before I send both back and i'm no further forward in replacing the boot struts - which is annoying, as the boot opens fine, then drops an inch or two and I keep banging my head

when i replaced mine i thought the same but i pushed the boot up a bit more and when it was fully up the were the correct fit lol
Ah, OK thanks - If I get a picture of the new struts next to the old ones that are on the car, can you let me know if these matched your new struts? I did push the boot up - but maybe more needed - not sure!

And all becomes clear. Although all of the eBay ones suggest they fit the 2004 3.2, they do not. The ones that state the OEM parts they replace are for OEM parts 8N8827552A and 8N8827552B

The Struts on my 3.2 are OEM part number 8N8827552D

I can find some on eBay but they're all Audi OEM ones and are 45 quid EACH!

Almost worth taking a bang in the head each time I open the boot!

More importantly, I'm not going mad, and the two pairs of struts I have DO NOT fit the car.

8N8827552A were up to VIN 8N-1-010000 (with spoiler)
8N8827552B were from VIN 8N-1-010001 to 8N-3-050000 but they are "Inter-Stop", which I think means they stop before their full travel, but can be lifted to go all the way.

8N8827552D were from VIN 8N-4-000001 possibly just due to the extra weight of the V6 spoiler that then became available.

Did you try fitting your new ones with both of the old ones removed?
(would only make a difference if the old ones are stopping the tailgate before the hinge hits its stops)
Good point, no I haven't, didn't want to cause any issues if they were too long, will the tailgate be ok if the struts are too long? Just gently lift it down?

Cheers

and from Lithuania or Latvia.....

It would be worth checking with your local TPS (if they'll speak to non trade...), failing that RPS on Facebook are a branch that deals with public.

I wouldn't want to be ordering anything from Lithuania or Latvia...!

No change to tailgate or hinges with the strut changes.

Mate, great shout, took both off, the boot went up another INCH and both sets of lifters work, so sending back the expensive ones

Thanks for your help all, it's nice to be on a forum where you don't get flamed for asking silly questions, that no doubt have been asked hundreds of times before :)

Cheers

I am very wary of cheap non-OEM struts .
A few years ago my mum began complaining that the tailgate of her C203 coupe was really heavy to lift and the struts were no longer offering much assistance.
Bought and fitted a set of SGS ones and opening the boot became quite unpleasant, it would shoot open like a rocket and the struts would judder as they did so.
We wished we'd left the original Mercedes ones on .
I wouldn't buy SGS ones again :? .
