Hi all,

I've got the MOT coming up in February and my 2 rear tyres are approx 2.5mm so I thought I'd get them changed.

When I bought my 2001 1.8 TT last August it came with 2 x brand new 'THREE A' P606 tyres to the front (225/45/ZR17), and 2 x MICHELIN Primacy (225/45/R17/91W) to the rear.

Am I best off replacing the 2 rear tyres with Michelins again ? I can get them supplied & fitted for approx ÂŁ180 locally. Alternately, should I be aiming to match the THREE-A brand as fitted at the front ?

Grateful for any advice

Thanks

Black Circles have always been a good experience for me in the past. I'm due to replace tires on mine as rears are getting low, even though fronts are fairly fresh they are budget.

I'm planning 4 new tyres, same brand all-round.

Have read lots of good things about Eagle F1 Asymetrical for both grip performance and quietness.

Thanks for all the advice ! I'll certainly look at switching the back tyres to 'Y' rated - does anybody know if the ZR17's I have at the front are sufficient for now ? It seems a shame to replace all 4 when the front 2 are still in pretty good nick.

Secondly, is anybody able to offer advice wrt tyres from the sub ÂŁ100ish price level ? I've seen good reviews for Continentals, Bridgestones, Avons & Dunlops

Do they just say "ZR" or do they say: 225/45ZR17 91Y ?

Many years ago, "ZR" was the highest speed rating and just means "Over 150 mph".
Later on the "W" & "Y" ratings were added, so you had for example: 225/45ZR17 91W or 225/45ZR17 91Y, but the tyre may also be labled as 225/45R17 91W or 225/45R17 91Y.

There is now also the "(Y)" speed rating, which is higher than "Y".

So your "ZR" tyres may be ok, but also may not be.

Never heard of "Three A" in my 8 years in the industry which suggests they are cheap and nasty budgets so i wouldnt be looking to match them and if anything get rid of them as well...

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Assym 3's on my TT at the moment and love them, they are a fantastic tyre. Have also run Dunlop Sport Maxx in the past on my RX8 which were also excellent tyres. Michelins are always generally one of the best all round tyres but also usually the most expensive. Personally i am sticking with Goodyears on my TT when i come round to replacing again later this year

A quick Google finds that yes, "Three A P606" is a Chinese tyre.
Not that cheap though.

Totally agree, :)
I've used Blackcircles.com for the last ten years

What would people recommend for the very best tyre for wet conditions? (18inch)

Just asking as on my current budget tyres (5mm remaining) I managed a spectacular 4 wheel slide when taking a roundabout quite quickly. I get no wheel spin at all in general driving however I provoke it, but its not great on roundabouts etc

As mentioned above, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assym 3 always gets good reviews.
I currently have Dunlop SportMaxx RT and I'm torn between the new Dunlop RT2 and the Goodyear.
Both are "A" rated for the wet.
Goodyear is "C" rated for rolling resistance and the Dunlop has versions that are "B" and others that are "C" for the same size.
All close in price too.

I'd avoid Uniroyal Rainsports to be honest the side walls are just too soft, makes the car unstable when corning hard. Though i guess it depends how you drive, grip levels are pretty good for the price, i just dont like the feeling. I should probably note i've not used them on the TT, used them on a clio 182 in 16 and 15 inch, and a diesel jetta in 16 inch. The wheel rolls over the side wall of the trye even in XL

Goodyear ASY3 are a good shout, again a little soft in the side wall, but not to the same degree as the Uniroyal's.

Another cheaper alternative is the Hankook V12 evo 2

I'll be going Michelin PS4's next though. As mentioned above they are the only thing touching the road, get the best tyres you can, they aren't that expense really, at least not in 225/40/18. Approx ÂŁ100 fitted each for PS4

Michelins tend to work pretty well - but you pay for what you get.

I have Vredestein Ultrac Satins on mine at the moment - they're alright. A rated if you buy into that sort of thing, and they're very quiet. I will say the sidewalls are a bit soft mind, then again, buy some bridgestones if you want a stiffer carcass.

Can't say I agree Darryl, I hammered mine around a 1000+ mile road trip in Scotland at well into 3 figure speeds and the handling was spot on with tyres giving a very progressive feel

So I've been quoted ÂŁ75 per tyre for Uniroyal 225/45R17 91Y Rainsport 3's. Is that the correct size for my 2001 1781 cc TT ? I've also been offered 225/45R17 94Y Rainsport 3's for the same price - a little confused
Both are the same size.
The "91" & "94" is the load index of the tyre.
You only need the "91".

Both are "Y" rated for speed, so all good there.
