Oil light after 2100 miles

Guys, I have only put 2100 miles on the car since new and already the oil light is on, is this normal? Also, if I am going to fill her up, how much does it take and what's the best oil to use? I don't have my manual or anything here with me and I'm worried about my 60 mile drive home.

Thanks, Adam.

For what ever reason I think its common knowledge that the Audi turbo engines use a lot of oil.
I frequesntly check mine and in 3,500 miles have nearly used all of the litre which came with the car.
Why do these engines like oil so much ?

You need to be checking your oil level a bit more frequently. (check the manual).
Then you might get a better idea of just how much it's using.
I've had the car little over a month - Would a check every 1000 miles be sufficient? First time I've owned an oil guzzling car. I don't recall my MR2 Turbo going through as much (although that was a few years back now).

Thanks for the replies.

Just checked the oil and it's full... This must be a fault but just got back from Audi and there are no fault codes and they said theres nothing they can do to fix it. The light has gone now, but worried it's going to come back again when I am not near an Audi garage..

Keep an eye on the oil level , once per week if it is your daily car or if you use on only the weekends , you can check it once per month on the same time you check you tyre pressure.

For you not to worry , check the oil temperature when you suspect you are low on oil or when the light comes back on , it if it abnormal and very high then yes you might be low on oil ( I am not a expert but I would say that above 97-100 degrees in normal driving condition will ring the bell for me ).
An other way to check would be oil pressure but we do not have it on our cars :?

My TFSI ( BWA ) has it periods when it " eats " a bit more oil than usual , nothing to worry about , the car " lives ".

Your engine is new , so it is normal. Everything is coming together.

My advice would be to always have 1L of 5W30 in the car so you can fill up should you have to.

( I use Castrol Edge 5W30 and am very happy with it then it is up to your personal preference , but the TFSI technology requires special oil VW 504/507 here is why : http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/for...org.au/forums/f112/why-you-need-use-504-507-oils-fsi-tsi-tdi-engines-47140.html )

Adam, my car came with a litre of Castrol SLX 5W-30 in the boot. have a look as should be there in a leather case. That's the Audi recommended one.

Thanks guys I will have a look and keep an eye on it. For info the oil temp was 94 too, but I've let it cool and it's still showing MAX so will just have to keep an eye on it. I might call the guy I bought it from for advice. I will check for oil in the boot too :)

Do remember that the oil warning works off a sensor on the dipstick, so if the dipstick wasn't fully seated originally, you would have got a falsely low level reading. That's much more likely than any major oil pressure issues.

Basically, you should check it once a week manually, or before going on an exceptionally long journey. Do not rely on the light!

Thanks again for the advice. I checked it again this weekend and it was certainly low. After 2000 miles should it really have used up all the oil? Seems a little too eager to burn oil at that rate?

Anyway, I used Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1 (there were two options; A1 or A3/B4). Hope this is okay. I checked the boot and there wasn't anything in there from the dealer :?

A friend of mine who works as a Skoda MasterTech says they're putting beggar-all in them from the factory to save money, but that the dealers will top the engine off FOC once if you take it back to the supplying dealer.

You should also have a little leatherette pouch in the boot with a litre of oil in it for topping up purposes.

Hi Adam, Castrol Magnatec is not the correct oil, the only Castrol oil that is to Audi spec of 504/507 is Castrol Edge 5w-30.
It won't do any harm short term as a top up, but use the correct Audi spec in the future, if I was you & check more frequently as suggested, oil light may not work next time when it should. [smiley=bigcry.gif]
