Rear differential making a noise

Hi Guys,

The last 6 months or so my rear diff has started making a whining noise and it's due a haldex service but my local garage who are superstars said that it was not worth doing a haldex service even with a new haldex pump unless I get a new second hand rear differential as it all comes together in one unit.
My Audi TT Mk1 is a 180 on an 02 plate and has done 179K miles.
What is best and where can I buy a good second hand rear diff so my garage can fit. I take it they don't make them new anymore. Can I buy a reconditioned one ? or get one reconditioned ? I've seen second hand ones for sale on eBay foe about ÂŁ200....thing is the TTs they came off are about the same year as my 02 plate and I don't know how many miles they have done so if I buy one it could potentially only last 6 months to a year and then I've got the same problem again ....please can you help guys as I'm a bit stuck what to do that is best.....thanks........Rob

The haldex is nothing to do with the rear diff... and the haldex filter and oil is only about 55 if you have the spanner.

Why not change the diff oil instead... that's about ÂŁ12 for the gl-5

It might not actually be the rear diff making a noise, I thought it was that in my s3 and it was tyre pressures, then it was wheel alignment on a seperate occasion. And on my TT I thought transmission, transfer box and it was front wheel bearings.
HI Stuart ....thanks for your reply.... I've had it all checked out by my local garage and they say the rear differential needs replacing.......Rob
