Upgrading sound system

Afternoon chaps

I want to upgrade my sound system in my 2002 MK1 TT - the speakers are not Bose and to be honest they sound a bit distorted. I like to turn the music up when i'm driving.
Any good links or advice on what a good set up would be?
I'm thinking of upgrading the door speakers, the amp and maybe fitting a small sub (allowing some boot space if possible!!).

Not sure on budget but i'd like to keep it as reasonably priced as possible. Obviously not cheap and nasty but certainly not mega expensive! Preferably something easy enough to do myself.

What upgrades do we have if any?

Hi Fallon,

Can I hijack this thread please ?

I am also looking at doing the same thing.
Fortunately I have the Bose Speakers & disk auto-changer, in a rear seat cubby, & I have heard about this "Concert" CD player for the dash hole..

As I understand it, the Concert device is the thing to get, but maybe it needs some sort of interface for the wiring & stuff.

I'm keen on getting one if anybody has one of these spare, to fit a BAM 220 on a 2001.

Any light that can be shed on this may help both of us here.
Regards
Grant B

would be much much better off to completely overlook whats already in the car and buy everything again, starting with soundproofing here and there, a 6 way amp, a good headunit, decent speakers, job done.
Cheers mate for the reply.

Excuse my ignorance but can i ask where you would put soundproofing and why?
There is a decent Pioneer head unit already installed in the car with bluetooth and handsfree phone kit.
How many speakers are actually in the mk1? Would i need to replace all the current speakers or could I keep some in place?

Sorry for all the questions - Just assume i'm an idiot

FYI

The head unit i have installed at the moment is a Pioneer DEH-6400BT

Do you think this would be good enough to run new amp, sub, speakers etc?

Also whoever installed it before my ownership, has done it so that i can't close the silver flap (with the TT logo on). This isn't right surely? Can this be rectified so i can close the flap?

The TT is fairly unique in having the flap and so aftermarket manufacturers didn't really consider it when designing their units. As such there's not a lot of clearance for any knobs or other parts of the stereo that protrude.

Do I assume that some part of the DEH-6400BT is fouling the flap and preventing it from closing properly?

Not usually an incorrect install; more an incorrect or poor choice of headunit in the first place. :? I think to get the headunit to sit further back into the dash would require some modification. It's not normally adjustable.

Thanks for the reply mate.Yes the volume knob sticks out too far (thats what she said anyway  ) ... No on serious note yes it prevents it shutting down. I think perhaps i need a head unit which doesn't stick out so far.

I have seen a few vids on Youtube but can't work out exactly how they've done it. To be honest I'd just like to close it when i take off the front of the head unit at night.

Anyone able to share some advice on the link above regarding the underseat sub?

Also a question re the chrome flap which open/closes over the stereo? The car came with an aftermarket Pioneer head unit and the flap has never closed. How should the flap close? Should it click when it is pushed down? Because I removed the head unit and it still doesn't stay shut?

I welcome any advice.
Thanks

Hi thought i'd reply here again to try and gain some more advice...

With the above mentioned Pioneer head unit already, would installing an amplified sub improve the standard speaker system? Or would I need to strip back existing system and start from scratch?
If I am just repeating what has been posted on the forum I apologise. Just don't seem to be able to find an "idiot proof" description of what I need to do!!

If there is any useful links I would very much appreciate it as don't seem to be able to find what I am looking for via the search option on here.

All the best and thanks in advance!

There isn't really an 'idiot proof' solution. Getting the right harness adapter can be a nightmare as can finding direct replacement speakers.

As you're non-Bose I would suggest investing in new speakers, amp, wiring, etc and completely by-passing the oem system.

I agree, but not sure I'd replace the rear amp with another amp. Modern head units have good output stages, usually with front and rear outputs. So, just run new cables from the HU to each (new) rear drive units, and remove the redundant rear amp (which is attached to the rear speaker, passenger side). Existing wiring to (new) front drive units re-used. Not too difficult, and should deliver a worthwhile sound upgrade. Mac.

Thanks for the replies guys.

What I am thinking is:

- New component speakers in the doors and new tweeters. Wire these straight to the head unit.
- New rear speakers - Coax speakers i believe they are called?
- I quite fancy adding a sub in the boot so thinking maybe I could fit a new amp in the boot and then run new wires to the rear speakers and sub?

Does this sound like a good option?

... and now I am thinking of maybe fitting a rear seat delete kit... More and more expense... does this obsession ever end??

Sound wise, I'd do as you suggest, but leave the sub till you've heard your drive unit upgrade in action. Maybe run the required line outs from the HU to the rear, so you're ready to fit a sub, if and when. You can use the switched 12v, that runs the oem rear amp now, for the sub too. Mac.

Thanks again bud. In your opinion do you think the head unit I have would be enough to power door components/tweeters and the rear coax speakers too? If I do so should I leave the amp in situ or disconnect it?

Your HU has 4 X 50 watt MOSFet outputs, so I'd say yes. Drive units are, imo, the most significant element, so I'd concentrate on getting them upgraded, and see how it sounds. Mac.
Nice one Mac appreciate your time.

Sorry can you confirm if you are saying to disconnect the OEM amp or leave it?

Last question (maybe...) - Can you recommend a good place to buy speakers from?

Hi, yes, I'd run 4 wires from HU to the rear speakers, and drive them direct from HU. As the rear amp is actually attached to one of the rear speakers, it'll come out with it. The line outs (L & R) to that amp could be used, later, to drive a sub. As for speakers (6.5"), set a budget, and then do the online research. Plenty of projects to get hints and tips on. Mac.

Having spent a lot on my TT audio and not getting it where I'd like it to be, here are some thoughts:

-OEM tweeters on the doors are good, they are essentially mid-tweeters and you should keep them.
-Speakers on the door are crap, you should replace them with decent units that fit. Also soundproofing doors is good.
-Bose or non-bose, dont bother with rear speakers, they are a pain to work on/replace/upgrade and you won't hear the sound from them anyways; most probably the OEM paper drivers have split after 15+ years.

Most sound comes from the front speakers, upgrading them with good soundproofing and maybe a 2ch amp will produce 90% of the sound.

Thought i'd pick up where I am with my sound system in hope someone can help.

I now have new:
- Coax speakers for rear
- Component speakers/tweeters for front
- a Pioneer GM-D1004 amp
- HU is a Pioneer DEH-6400BT

I have removed the rear seats and fit the new speakers in the rear. I need to run new wiring to the HU though which is no problem.
-
I removed the glovebox and the centre console around the HU, air con/fans, etc to expose the wiring as there was no play on the wiring at all!
-
When I connected the amp up to the HU, sound comes through the speakers but the amp is not turning on (there is no power light on the side of the amp).
-
In the instructions manual and the guy in the audio store say that the amp powers straight from the HU, but it is not working. Someone I spoke to mentioned it may need a remote live and a power supply to the battery, but if they store and the manual say it doesn't then that can't be right surely?
-
I'd really appreciate any advice because I am scratching my head trying to get to the bottom of it.

Many thanks in advance.
