Check in Windows Devices.
See if the VCP has drivers loaded. If it has then check which Com port is assigned to it.

 

Hi, Very common & trial & error. Don't use the CD that came with it & try selecting different usb/com ports in window devices/properties.

One common problem is that the correct USB to serial driver is not installed before the kkl cable is plugged into the pc, if so, the standard USB driver will be allocated. Once this is done, your snookered.
Remove the cable. Use Device Manager to remove the device (cable) completely, then install the correct driver. Restart the pc. Now plug the cable in, and it will (should) allocate the newly installed driver.
On VCDS check each of the 4 ports, one will recognise the cabke, usually port 4. You can allocate it to port 1, with Device MANAGER. I used this driver from Gendan on my XP notebook.

For the drivers, it depends which chip is in your cable.

If it is an FTDI chip:

I tried that, but couldn't find an XP compatible driver on FTDI. The cable is genuine Gendan, they had an offer before Christmas.

I previously ran vcds on W10, with driver CH340 and an ebay KKL.

Vcdslite works fine on windows 10, I used it yesterday.

You need to find the com port it is associated with (ch340) - it might be more than 4 mine has come up as 5 or 6 previously. And set it to 1-4 then always use the same slot, or it will assign a new port number. If you inserted the cable before the software was installed, you need the delete the device. Then the next time you plug it in it will assign the correct driver.
You also probably want to 'show hidden devices' on device manager, as you may only see it there, unless plugged in.

 

I had all sorts of issues getting mine to run initially, but I also found that mine (an old Compaq laptop running Windows XP) will only work with the cable in one USB socket - if I use any of the others, it doesn't recognise it.

worked first time for me on an old XP machine.

When i get 5 mins i`ll post some pics,its all downloaded,when i click on the com port of vcds to select a port it come up with port does not exist,im going to try what badger tt says to try

 

My experience is that the pc will not have the correct driver pre installed. If you let the pc select a driver, it'll select a standard usb driver, which does not match the kkl cable. You must install the correct driver first BEFORE plugging the kkl cable in for the first time.
If you have already plugged the cable in before, or without installing the correct driver, you must de-install the device (the cable), and start again.
That's almost certainly why you're seeing "Port Does Not Exist"

IIRC, I had to play around with port assignments in Windows 10 device manager.
Due to the number of devices and drives that I have previously installed, my cable was assigned as Com port 10. VCDS Lite only acknowledged the old-school COM ports 1-4, I believe.
Having moved the COM port assignments around so that my cable is assigned COM 4, it worked.
Sorry, I do not recall how I achieved that, it was somewhere in Device Manager I believe.

 

This is Windows 11, but it hasn't changed much.
That is just the motherboard's Com port, but the procedure for the VCP (Virtual Com Port) device is the same.

 

ive found what the problem is there is no sign of any com ports on my device manager hence i cant select any,do know why, dont know how i would even go about putting any on,wish id never started this shit its going to really annoy the fxxk out of me now

 

Post up a pic of your device manager WITH your cable plugged in.

There is only 2 of them i could use as numbered 1, 3 and 6
I chose 3 and then had to try all the usb sockets to find the correct one after setting VCDS to com 3
