What iPod lead do I need

My new (to me) TT has Bose with IPod connection so inside my glovebox, I can see a iPod type connecter and a packet of plastic adapters. I want to connect my iPhone 4 so what do I need. Is it a lead? I've just bought what I thought was right from eBay which was called an iPod and USB ami cable - described as leads for audis with iPod connectors in the glovebox. There are two short cables but they are different to the connector in the glove box. The parts I have are 4F0 051 510 Q (USB) and a 4F0 051 510K (iPod).

:?

If you don't have a box labelled Audi Music Interface (which you won't if you don't have RNS-E sat nav) then the iPod connection is such that the iPod plugs directly into the interface without a cable. The plastic adapters are for the different iPod models so that it doesn't rattle around in the glovebox. AFAIK there is no adapter for iPhone 4, or even 3G, the adapters are for the older 4G/5G iPods or the iPod mini/nano.

A friend of mine had the same problem and I got him one of these:

He had to do a bit of modelling on the female end to get it to fit, but his iPhone now works as a player. I don't think this will charge as well, though.

Thanks guys. It was a dealer who told me to get a lead from parts after showing me the socket in the glovebox. I have no comeback however as I didn't buy that particular car from him :p

critter10, did your mate have an iPhone 4. I've taken the plastic adapter out and pushed my iPhone 4 into the plug and I can't get it to work. The symphony manual says press CD until I see the CD 7-11 but that screen is blank against all the CDs and says "no cd" in the middle so assume it's not seeing it.

I'll check and get back to you. I have the same basic set up in my car at the mo, but plug a regular iPod in. I'll try his lead with my iPhone 4 (think his is a 3GS). I'll post again tomorrow.

Okay, curiosity got the better of me and I called my friend. He does have an iPhone 4 and a Concert II head-unit - not sure what you've got. It works fine. Hopefully someone else with more direct knowledge than me can explain why your head unit does not recognise the iPhone. But it should work He wanted the extension cable because the iPod connector in the car is effectively being bent if you directly connect the iPhone - there being no appropriate mounting sleeve available. Eventually it would probably fail.

Soory - re-read your post and see you have a Symphony head unit. Maybe that's the problem, though I seriously doubt it.

Many thanks critter10. Tis strange. Maybe I should just get the extension lead and try it. Maybe I'm not getting a good connection plugging directly in. Should I see something against cd 7 when it connects? Do I need to connect before putting on the ignition ?

When you plug the iPod/iPhone in, the first 5 playlists on the device should correspond to CDs 1-5 on the HU. CD6 plays all the tracks on the iPod. That's why it's recommended to have only 5 playlists on the iPod. Best solution IMHO is to pick up a cheap iPod mini and use that in the car all the time.

I've borrowed an iPod 4th gen 60gb and I have 7 playlists on there from a sync with my iTunes. When plugged into the iPod socket, I now get CD slots 7-12 saying there is a cd but it either quickly scrolls through the tracks, saying track1, track 2, track 3 etc about one every second or it says loading......forever. No sound comes out at all

I might have to resort to burning some mp3 cd's :(

I've noticed you have a Symphony HU so on my previous post it should say CDs 7-11 for playlists and CD12 for all on the iPod. Strange that it's just skipping tracks like that. Have you tried just having 5 playlists and see how that goes? Otherwise pop into your dealers as that definitely isn't working right.

I have the same setup on a 09 TT. Just bought the car and it has the ipod connector in the glove box with a bunch of plastic adapters.

I've tried my iphone in there, and it sorta works, but the phone needs to be pushed all the way and it easily loses connection, I'm guessing because of the iphone rubber case. I'm not using my ipod nano (6g) in the car, which works fine, but none of the adapters work.

Haven't been to the dealer, but I've checked audi's website which lists all the adapters and ipod/iphone versions, and it says that iphone 4 is not mechanically compatibile (wtf?! it worked fine!?) and there is no mention of nano 6th generation.

Anyways, I figured it would be easiest to just buy an extension cable (ipod to ipod connector, otherwise known as dock extension cable, not the USB cable) and I'll report as soon as I've had a chance to test it. The whole setup with the glove box connector is so awkward that I'm not even sure how I'm gonna get my ipod out of it. I mean I found a plastic adapter that "sorta" fits, it's at least better than nothing, but the thing is now stuck and I'll probably have to use pliers to get at it since my pudgy fingers can't get at it anymore.

Should have the cable tomorrow. If anyone finds a plastic adapter that works it would be nice if you posted here too :)

The problem is that the std iPod connector is old technology and the OEM adapters are for older iPods. I've used an original iPod mini and an iPod photo 30GB (both bought in 2005) in my S3 and in the TTS before I upgraded to AMI and they worked fine and fitted perfectly with the adapters. That gives you some sort of idea of the age of the products the connector was designed to work with. I'm not sure you can get adapters for newer models anywhere.

Yeah, the whole setup is very retro, there's poor control over the ipod, and then there's the whole business of having 5 virtual CDs and the whole music library as CD6. It takes some getting used to coming from a 2 year-older Merc.

I would prefer to use my phone rather than nano for the music in the car, so I hope the dock extender cable will work. I bought it yesterday, so it should be here today or tomorrow and I'll give it a shot. If I can easily hook up and remove my iphone and just have it sitting in the glove box then I'll learn to live with it. :)

I'm happy to report that the cable solution works fine, this is the cable I got:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00420LPE4

It's got nice and strong connectors, with proper grips, so it won't get loose if you drive over a few bumps. I can finally swap my ipod/iphone without fiddling with the unfortunately placed connector in the glove box, and the glasses holder works perfectly as an ipod holder.

It's a pain in the bum to get it in, I had to use a flashlight to see what I'm doing and a pair of pliers to actually place the connector cable, but after 15 minutes of fiddling with it, it's finally sitting securely and working as desired.

Now I can throw all those plastic adapters in the rubbish where they belong :)
